Akira Kurosawa's Something Like an Autobiography is a fantastic read. His descriptions of the Great Kanto Earthquake are quite harrowing and intense, as are his reminiscences on the atmosphere in Tokyo around the time of the Emperor's surrender speech. I also loved his discussions of the postwar filmmaking atmosphere in Japan.

Man, Death and the Maiden would make a great addition to the 'Collection.
Death and the Maiden is an amazing film and one of my favorites. The story is so simple yet so effective with everything taking place over one night with just three actors, and three good ones at that. I could totally see this film as a great fit in the collection.

Ironic.

This also happened to me for the very first time two weeks ago! I had bought Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at least a year earlier via Amazon.com. I finally decided to open it and much to my disbelief, there was NO DISC inside! My jaw dropped. I thought I was dreaming. How! Why! Where! What! Then I realized it was too late to return to Amazon. Yet I didn't want $13 thrown out so I contacted their returns department and astonishingly they sent me another copy for free! I was worried that the next copy would have no disc again. But luckily it was there. Strangely, it took 3 times for me to finally order the correct version of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because the first order they sent me the Canadian edition without the extras to which I returned and bought the U.S. version only to discover no disc and finally a third try got me everything. I immediately assumed it was fraud and that some illegal gang on the black market opened it, took out the disc and replaced it all with new cellophane plastic wrapping because the wrapping was kind of cheap. Now I think maybe the disc vanished... sort of like a joke... vanished like one's memories of something bad, such as from this actual movie!

Just finished Babette's Feast. Definitely going to try to convince my family to gather around and watch this one during the holidays. I was enjoying the film just fine, but I wasn't entirely engaged at first. However,
[Show spoiler]during the build up to the feast and during the feast itself, I felt myself being drawn in deeper and deeper. The final minutes were extremely moving and really snuck up on me.

I had purchased this set from a used store that was no longer in business when I got around to checking out the special features, so I thought that I was out of luck. I decided, however, to email Paramount directly, and ask for a replacement disc. About six weeks later, Paramount sent me a brand-spanking new disc of The Final Chapter enclosed in a disc sleeve.

My Blu-ray of Love Streams arrived in the mail today. (I'm keeping it real by mentioning something Criterion-related.)
Warner Bros. will allow an exchange 5 years later and within Canada? That's the problem. It's annoying, sure, but those episodes were of the weaker later seasons of Scooby Doo Where are You?. I'll try it.

As you remember, the Drunk Dog ended up being for Anatomy of a Murder, as the dog was like the dog in the film, and had Jimmy Stewart's fishing hat on.

I'm hoping I'll be ready to watch it over Christmas, because I'm stuck at Topsy-Turvy at the moment (haven't watched it yet no less), as I'm still waiting for The Mikado to come in the mail. I want to watch the two back to back, and I'm also trying to watch Criterions in Spine # order as much as possible. I had to jump around a bit at Halloween, if I got older Spines through a sale after I had watched newer numbers, or if I had to watch certain titles to check on Bronzegate issues. I'm almost back to Spine # order after I get my sale titles, because then I just need to backtrack for Beauty and the Beast, Red Shoes, and Ivan's Childhood. Then, Topsy-Turvy to It Happened One Night should be pretty straightforward with no skips or backtracks. Confusing, yes, but I'm enjoying it. I'm watching all the supplements except commentaries and trailers as well.

Anyone know when that 40% blu sale at B&N starts? I remember last year it started right after the CC sale. Would love to use it for Safe soon...

For those of you in the 'States who don't own a region free BD player: I just saw that Hulu has The Gospel According to St. Matthew. Hallelujah!

The UK Blu-ray is Region A compatible and will play on US players... and is only around $22 shipped to the US. It should be almost as good (if not better) than the Criterion edition.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Last-...Blu-ray/39027/

I'd purchase that edition, IMO.

I was going to suggest that but didn't think it was multi region! Im still deciding whether to go for that copy or get the Criterion one... I have 4 copies of the DVD to sell though lol.

Money wise it would be smarter to get SC version as I have the booklet and supplements already on DVD.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew is on YouTube too. I just wish it had a definitive release in the U.S. Biblical films seem to be quite popular these days. Why not make the best of the lot a little more accessible?

Funny someone mentioned the MoC release. I know MoC released Metropolis too...how does that compare to Kino's Complete Metropolis BD? I just saw the price for the latter is at an all-time low on Amazon.

They are re-releasing the steelbook in January

Also, I know religion can be quite touchy and maybe some studios are scared to touch them incase they cause controversy or something? I know Pasolini can be a bit daunting for some, especially if they have been told about Salo or The Trilogy of Life...
