After Hours would be interesting. Don't know if I would go for that one. Just didn't think it was all that great, personally. Much preferred The King of Comedy.

That said, Scorsese needs more coverage in the Criterion Collection. Last Temptation is there, but it's far from his best work. The World Cinema Collection has his name all over it, but he didn't have involvement with the production of the films themselves.

Taxi Driver would be nice. Maybe Raging Bull? All of the under-utilized ones are with WB. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Who's That Knocking at My Door, Bringng Out the Dead...

It'd be pretty difficult to top the current Taxi Driver release which I consider one of the greatest blu-ray releases ever. And Raging Bull has already been released on Blu-ray twice. But it would be great to have more Scorsese films on Criterion. Maybe The Age of Innocence is a possibility.

::EDIT::
I actually consider the Taxi Driver Blu-ray the single greatest Blu-ray release ever.

This is the most perplexing year of clues yet. Which can we say we are certain about?

The Brood (creepy looking buggers with sticks)
The Fisher King (man fishing)
Inside Llewyn Davis (man under the bridge)
A Master Builder (the man at the end of the bridge - Wallace Shawn)
Moonrise Kingdom (the house)
The New World (the ship)
Speedy (the man running - Harold Lloyd)

-----

The suns have been debated as being The Before Trilogy or Two Days, One Night. The cloud is still not certain but it seems possible it is Clouds of Sils Maria.

We are still unsure of what the bridge represents, but the broken portion could be hinting at Floating Weeds. Furthermore, the car on the bridge could either be Wim Wenders' Road Trilogy, Two for the Road, or something entirely different. As for the clock, it could either be After Hours (doubtful), The Big Clock (possible), or One, Two, Three (my guess).

We are graced with a battle between x-mouthed masked knife wielders and a group of cowboys led by a soldier. Who knows what that could be?

As for the stream, it could be hinting at Renoir's The River, but nothing is certain. Also, the eyeball more than likely is hinting at One-Eyed Jacks, the only film directed by Marlon Brando and a fitting film for The Criterion Collection, in my opinion. Still, do we have any other guesses?

Lastly, we have what appears to be the man from The Merchant of Four Seasons pushing a cart from Ugetsu, a girl in an eerily similar position as Nausicaä from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, a pyre or blood splatter spot that could be alluding to The Passion of Joan of Arc, and a rose, which could be a number of things.

And all of this in boxed inside of a window. The setting has never been of importance, but many like to think it's A Room with a View.

I'd kill for that - been putting off buying the French import since it seems that it's time for Criterion to step up to the plate and release it now.

After Hours would be a spectacular addition to the Criterion Collection. I may be the only person alive who considers it to be the best Scorsese film. If Criterion doesn't release it, I at least hope the Warner Archive puts it out.

I also really hope that the eye refers to One-Eyed Jacks. It would seem to be a natural after Criterion putting out the Monte Hellman Westerns double feature last year. I don't think One-Eyed Jacks has had a legit release since VHS days.

If it hadn't come out this past year, I would have assumed One Eyed Jack's was a Twin Peaks clue. And knowing that they liked Lynch, it would have been a possibility. Not really relevant anymore though.

Little tidbit that will probably get lost in the shuffle. But I have more than a hint that Brit Marling's "The Keeping Room" may be coming to Criterion. The film made the festival rounds this year and was acquired by Alamo Draft House for a wide release this fall.

Not confirmed, but I have a little wink that may indicate as much.

I bought a copy of Fox's release for next to nothing, just to see how bad it really was (I haven't watched it yet), but I would be more than happy to pony up for a properly mastered Criterion edition.
I agree, 'Oklahoma!' got all the love and attention, yet for reasons unknown, 'The King and I' really got the shaft...

Wild was a spectacular film! I really enjoyed this one... quite emotional and a surprise to see Laura Dern in it too. Didn't really research this film enough other than knowing Reece Witherspoon was in it. It's a pretty deep story and its effective in how it shows flashbacks throughout the film and the way it was edited in. It gives meaning and substance to the characters by exploring their lives from their past, mainly revolving around the main character, Cheryl Strayed, who is a real life person this film is based upon. The scenery was great, as it was shot in Oregon. It was a very moving story.

I think that Until the End of the World may be the film that is signified by the road/bridge ending... This is a Wenders film I think would fit nicely in the collection.

I absolutely love After Hours and it is at the top of my list of films for Criterion to release. Its a very entertaining and re-watchable movie full of mystery, suspense and comedy. Plus Cheech and Chong are in it (making this the closest possibility of ever seeing them in the Criterion Collection). I really hope Criterion releases it.

Turning away from the fascinating subject of what might be coming down the Criterion pipeline, I want to praise an existing release that I just saw for the very first time: Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique. The film itself (as those of you who have been lucky enough to have seen it are already aware) is a bona fide masterpiece, and the blu-ray presentation is absolutely outstanding. I bought Clouzot's The Wages of Fear as a blind buy this past summer, and was so impressed that I knew it was time to jump off the fence and buy Diabolique.

What a great start to my 2015 viewings!

Yes. Speculating is an amusing diversion but there's really nothing we can do about what titles are already in the works for the rest of the year, and there's no doubt it will be another eclectic mix that will appeal to most of us most of the time with a few inevitable complaints about what wasn't released.

Anyway, I started off the new year by finally getting around to watching the full-length TV mini-series version of FANNY AND ALEXANDER for the first time, watching the prologue and first three acts in the afternoon, taking a dinner break, and the last two acts and epilogue tonight, followed by most of the "making-of" documentary.

It's definitely Bergman at his best, treating virtually all the familiar themes from his greatest films of the previous 30 years yet filtering them through the nostalgic eyes of children and a single family, with a far more hopeful outlook than some of his classics yet just as involving, just as moving, and just as philosophically challenging. Now that I've seen the nearly 5 1/2-hour cut, I don't think I'll be able to watch the 3-hour theatrical cut again. While it's an accessible film for those who have seen little or no previous Bergman works, it is much richer when you've already seen most of his major films.

speaking of tv mini series - I've been continually requesting Billie August's 'The Best Intentions' - now that's a little seen excellent movie that I feel Criterion needs to release to the masses.

The rose clue could be the obvious. I think it is The Rose (1979) starring Bette Midler. A loose adaptation of the life of Janis Joplin. It was nominated for multiple academy awards. I never saw it, but remember it being a big deal back then. Released the same year as All That Jazz, there were two big music pictures that year. It also keeps the Harry Dean Stanton streak going in the Criterion Collection (a big oversight on my part not having seen this HDS film yet).

I dunno, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

As much as I like the sound of the Disney Beauty and the Beast joining the collection, it does seem like something that might never happen. I think the only thing helping the idea a bit more is that it's OOP at this time.

The Rose with Bette Midler does seem like something that would make sense too.

The thing that irritates me (because it gave me hope and I'm sure it won't be anything close to this ) is that whoever drew the rose, made it exactly like the Beauty and the Beast rose, with the curved stem, exactly in the same pose and all.
He should have made it in another way eg. with a straight stem or something, or lying horizontally like in some The Rose artwork I see etc.

If I had to pick something else for the rose clue, I would be interested in
The Name of the Rose.
Though it has a US release, it was newly restored for the French edition:
