The road and the car on the New Year's Drawing are definitely a reference to Wim Wenders' road movies. I'm not sure if it has already been brought up here, but I just found out that Wenders himself confirmed that his Road Trilogy would be released by Criterion.
Quote:
Pressed for more about what's coming from Criterion, Wenders seemed reluctant to get into full details, but confirmed that his Road Trilogy— “Alice In The Cities,” “The Wrong Move," and “Kings of the Road”— would surface on the boutique DVD label (eagle-eyed cinephiles will notice that ‘Alice’ is already available on Hulu Plus’ Criterion channel).

I wouldn't mine upgrading that one either.

The Wim Wenders' pictures are on iScotties list. I think some of the other clue are probably Kiarostami's Koker trilogy, but don't know films well enough to say. Is the couple in the car definitely from the Road trilogy, do you recognize the image? Anyway, thanks for posting .

So my wife is out of town for a week and I have nights, and all day Saturday and Sunday to myself. I have the following Criterion filmss still unwatched:

39 Steps
3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman
The 400 Blows
Breathless
John Cassavetes: Five Films
F for Fake
The Great Dictator
Hidden Fortress
Howard's End
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
L’avventura
Like Someone in Love
The Night Porter
Safe
Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
Things to Come
Three Colors
I Am Curious
Eclipse 1 Early Bergman

I also have Bridge on the River Kwai and Touch of Evil. My problem is I'm overwhelmed and just don't know where to start , a terrible problem I know. Tonight I'm catching up on some ESPN 30 for 30. And I think I'm saving the Bergman, Cassavetes, Colors, and Curious box sets for the weekend.

So.... Where would you start??

I'd start with these...

The 39 Steps
Seven Samurai
L’Avventura
Breathless
Three Colors Trilogy

I'd also make Touch of Evil a priority if I were you. That's a class act film noir.

I was thinking of moving Touch of Evil to number one... It just came in from Amazon and I'm itching to watch.

And I was thinking of 39 Steps as well.. I've been in a Hitchcock mood lately, and just watched Man Who Knew Too Much. Thanks for your suggestions! Always good to hear your ideas.

Thanks octagon, I think Touch of Evil has it... then maybe Three Colors. I have heard that it's best not to watch all three back to back, anyone else think that?

Do NOT pass up on those Cassavetes films! At the very least try and squeeze in Faces. That box set is one of the best things Criterion has ever produced.
Other top choices are Seven Samurai/Hidden Fortress, The 400 Blows and Investigation Of a Citizen, Three Colours and The Seventh Seal.
Lots of great stuff on that list though!

Thanks JoeBuck! I wish I was still on vacation so I could just pull some all nighters and just do a big marathon... but alas I have to go to work. The Cassavetes set really does excite me though... gotta fit it in soon.

I would bet it's "One, Two, Three" esp since Twilight didn't get that title. Can "The Fisher King" be using a "Paper Moon" as bait? "Paper Moon" (1973) was restored and screened at the TCM festival last year

I feel bad for the people that this upsets, I really do. But...

It's all about the disc content for me. I'd much rather they spend the money there.

Yeah feel bad for me !....but back in the day it was the whole package that made Criterion special....so special i was willing to spent extra on releases from them.
If this is where Criterion is heading i guess i will be waiting on other companies like ARROW....where i will be spending my money

Its not One, Two, Three according to (Walter?) ScorpionReleasing.
Another company supposedly managed to snap up the rights to it. I have a strong feeling that its gonna be going to Kino Studio Classics.

So what was the consensus on the Boyhood release? is it certain that it will get a CC release down the road or is it still a rumor?

I was thinking on buying it tomorrow, but i can wait if CC will release it with more extras.
