![]() ![]() ![]() Hello everyone ![]() Here are the requested packaging photos for Criterion's upcoming titles. More photos in the individual reviews. Our review of My Winnipeg will be up tonight. Tomorrow we will have Satyricon covered, while on Sunday we will finally have the review for Les Blank. This will end the holiday backlog. Also coming up are three Region-B reviews. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 01-30-2015 at 08:43 PM. |

When it comes to leaflets (and I guess they're here to stay), I prefer the simpler fold-out style of Every Man for Himself to the roadmap style of Don't Look Now. I also prefer readable and informative text to artsy posters. Just saying, as they say,

![]() These look really good, so I think you will like them a lot. There are some terrific supplemental features on the upcoming releases as well. The Godard release, in particular, is phenomenal. ![]() Pro-B |

Critical opinion has always been sharply divided on Satyricon; even at the time of its release, it was hailed as both a masterpiece and a travesty. For that reason, I would be hesitant to recommend it as a blind buy ... |

I am definitely going to purchase An Autumn Afternoon and Don't Look Now, though, in March. ![]() |

So should I consider purchasing Don't Look Now as a blind buy? I think Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie are wonderful, I'm a big mystery buff and respect the reputation of Daphne du Maurier ... and yet, except for Insignificance, I'm largely unfamiliar with Nicholas Roeg. Plus, somehow, I've linked Don't Look Now and Straw Dogs in my mind, and I didn't care for Straw Dogs at all because I found it misogynistic and illogical ... |

I do own Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs on Blu-ray, but I get where you're coming from. I consider it to be the most disturbing film in my entire collection for many reasons. There are no real protagonists in the story. From Dustin Hoffman's passive-aggressiveness to Susan George's taunting demeanor to the behavior of the townspeople, there's not a lot to which most of us can relate. Although I often feel uncomfortable about the film, however, I somehow keep returning to it on occasion. The movie always leaves a scar, and, for that reason, it's interesting to watch for its sheer effectiveness, and to wonder how I would behave if I were in Hoffman's situation. Don't Look Now is definitely more rooted in mystery and in gothic horror of a fascinating sort. As far as other Nicolas Roeg films go... Walkabout is amazing, amazing, amazing. It's one of the most eerie, but gorgeous titles in the Collection, and the Australian wilderness has rarely looked more otherworldly. I saw Bad Timing a few years ago, and did not quite warm up to it, but I've been meaning to give it another chance, because I think that it deserves one. I've watched my newly-acquired Criterion Blu-ray of The Man Who Fell to Earth twice since it arrived last week. It's such an intuitive and tragic film, and I've forgotten how much I loved the DVD. Speaking of The Man Who Fell to Earth, I'm still on a big David Bowie kick, and have been revisiting his CDs on my shelf. When I was in Athens, Georgia for a training class this week, I went record shopping, as I always do when I visit that town. I ended up buying the soundtrack CD to Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture, because that's one of the few gaps in my collection. I really wish that Criterion would pick up that movie as a title, because it's quite a good live performance film, and because D.A. Pennebaker is already in the Collection with his Monterey Pop film. |
