There are running story-lines, but none that are conceptualized and executed over the actual life spans of the actors involved.

Two and a Half Men just wrapped up here in the States after 12 seasons and those who watched saw Angus T. Jones (Jake) grow from age 9 to age 21; to say that is even remotely comparable to what Linklater did with a feature film would be objectively wrong.
But the concept has been done and executed - He filmed scenes over a period of time, they weren't filming constantly for whoever long it was.

I get what you are saying and the difference,s but the concept an idea has been done - just slightly differently :P

People here probably hate my opinions but oh well lol

Even if it was the first to do it it was still poorly done in my opinion, scenes are rushed, we miss important aspects of his life, the acting was poor etc etc for me it was just a bad film lol and I couldn't connect with it.

You are still seeing someone age in front of you over a very long period of time.

It's not analogous.

It is lol, in Eastenders you watch him grow over 30 years in front of you, it is exactly the same as Boyhood in that aspect, only they didn't use it as a gimmick to sell the program.

Yes they are different stories and in Boyhood the focus is on Mason as his family, but Eastenders has still done the using the same character for years on end.

Im not saying they are the exact same thing, I'm just saying the idea of having someone grow in front of you on film ha been done...

I don't know why you are trying to argue the point, if you don't believe that then fine, but you can't force me to like the film and believe something that I don't.

In Eastenders and Boyhood they have filmed and used the same actors and watch them both grow infant of you, you can not argue that lol.

If you cant see my point then fine, it doesn't bother me... I don't like the film and it is flawed, I will give it a rewatch some day but I am in no rush and when I left the cinema it had no effect on me like most films.

I have no problem with you not liking the film; that's perfectly fine and you've expressed subjective reasons it didn't work for you, which I respect.

Your assertion about it being analogous is objectively wrong, that's my issue.

I dont understand why you cant get my point...

Both feature a character that has been filmed over the years and grown before your eyes.... They BOTH feature this... I am not saying Eastenders is good, because it isn't but they have their similarities....

No worries though lol

He gets your point. I get your point. A character grows up right there on the screen and over the course of many years. However, you also said this:

"As I have stated before its been done before... there is nothing new with this film really..."

so, my question is: is that the "it?" a character on screen grows up before our eyes? because if that is the "it," it is fairly obvious that you are missing our point.

and as I've made clear, I didn't much care for the film, so that has nothing to do with it.

Thumbs up

I watched the stunningly beautiful Cries and Whispers last night. Somehow I never got around to watching this before but am thankful I waited for the BD release.

I love Bergman's intimate chamber pieces and this is one of his absolute best.

This may be a difficult watch at times but is, IMO, what film is all about. I look forward to repeat viewings.

I already answered this, the concept and idea has been done before... even if it was unintentional or not planned it still happened.

Maybe I'm just being stupid then

Being from the UK, have you regularly watched the Up Series? I didn't discover it until maybe six or seven years ago when I used to get disc rentals through Netflix, but I was immediately drawn to the concept. I think I got up to about 35 Up or 42 Up before stopping my disc rentals and only using the streaming part of Netflix. I know there was always controversy among the participants and how they felt they were portrayed in the series, but I always wondered if it's a popular series over there in the UK?

People trying to discredit Linklater's achievement are petty. It hadn't been done before. Bringing in a TV show like Mad Men or something (Weiner commenting on this saying that they aren't alike, by the way) just makes it seem like you have a fundamental misunderstanding for the approach.

And the notion that the production history is the sole reason for why the film has been highly regarded is silly. It directly corresponds with its thematic concerns.

It's not remotely silly if you think literally every other thing about the production is wretched.

I agree with you to an extent. The idea of watching an actor grow and age in front of our eyes is not new. For example, one could watch the Harry Potter series and clearly see the main cast go from being children to young adults. However, what's unique, or at least groundbreaking, is that this is a fiction film telling a single story, planned in advance to film at different stages over a period twelve years. That's a pretty bold effort and one, that I'm aware of, hadn't been tackled before, at least in mainstream filmmaking. I mean, what if the kid had died?

The Up series is a very fascinating series. I first saw it in the early 90s, which would have been 35 Up I think? For those who don't know about it, it's a documentary series though, so not quite the same as Boyhood but certainly an interesting watch for those who liked Linklater's film.
