So was Day for Night another licensing deal with WB or did WB lose the U.S. rights?

I know right, I dunno why they are struggling to get the funding for this...

Didn't M. Night Shyamalan get like around $5,000,000 for The Visit, another lame found footage film - surely those funds could have been put to better use?

I believe it's streaming on Warner Archive Instant, so they got it from WB.

I guess that Wall of Supporting Directors has already put money into this project.

Q: Why aren't you funding this film on your own?
A: A lot of money has already been put into this project, not to mention $750,000 (in 1970 money) of Orson's Personal Finances. We've had to acquire a lot of different people who have invested into this film, and now its time for it to be made. This is the last step.

Q: Why aren't the big Directors/Actors who have supported you paying for the film?
A: Many have! Everyone involved has put time/money/effort into this campaign. But this isn't a project for big cinephiles, its for every person who loves movies.

The distributors don't want to put up any money until they see the edited film and those involved can't edit the film unless they have the money first. Hence the crowdfunding.

It's an entirely different ballgame to financing a production of a Shyamalan film that, let's face it, will probably make a profit.

I finished Shoah this morning and I would rate it as a solid documentary, yet one of the most comprehensive works on the Holocaust.

I think the Second Era is better than the First Era as the interviews seemed much more vivid and in-depth. Most importantly, however, Lanzmann appeared to have taken a step back and allowed his subjects to speak freely without his constant interruptions.

Glad I was able to fit it into my schedule, but once was clearly enough.

The latter is not exactly a news, but it's good to hear that they're working on a DFN.
Good article, and I'd call this a semi confirmation of The Kid since he has touched the print, but not much doubt it would one day be Criterion.

I hope Criterion could get Akira Kurosawa's Dreams from Warner since the latter doesn't seem like they're going to release it on BD anytime soon. Probably not on Criterion's radar, but one can wish . The DVD appears to be OOP at the moment too sadly.

Warner Archive said last year that it was "under consideration" for Blu, but since then their DVD release has went OOP so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it went to Criterion. In fact, back in November, it was noted that these went OOP at around the same time:

Dreams (Akira Kurosawa)
Blow Up (Michelangelo Antonioni)
The Breaking Point (Michael Curtiz)
Barcelona (Whit Stillman)
Magnificent Ambersons (Orson Welles)
The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston)
A Face in the Crowd (Elia Kazan)
Klute (Alan Pakula)
Day for Night (Francois Truffaut)
Before Sunset (Richard Linklater)
Cat People (Jacques Tourneur)
Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater)

Day for Night and the Before Trilogy have already been confirmed as future Criterion releases, and Whit Stillman has made no secret of wanting Criterion to release Barcelona so that's also likely.

Yeah I was the one that had asked them back then and that was the reply they gave me. Would love for Criterion to get The Asphalt Jungle, and The Magnificent Ambersons

Warner love their noirs. It would be a major surprise if they license one of the finest noirs, The Asphalt Jungle, to CC. I'm also suspicious about Cat People.

All other titles from that OOP DVD list sounds like a future CC releases.

True, hopefully they release it themselves sometime, even if it's through the Archive like with Out of the Past.

I want BLOW UP badly in the OAR. It would be nice to get some good extras for the film. but if it can be a great 4K scan and correct ratio I will be thrilled.

I can only see WB licensing out what they call World Cinema titles since they know Criterion can sell those better than anyone else.

If I'm not mistaken this led to some bad feelings between Spielberg and Welles, when Welles very publicly announced that Spielberg's purchase had never been in the film, or wasn't authentic, or something like that. Prior to that, I think that Spielberg was considering producing a movie with Welles, or contributing to one in some way, but Welles's pronouncement soured that. Also, this was around the time of 1941 which was a relative disappointment, so Spielberg may have been looking to jump on the Indiana Jones horse more than working with a problematic if supremely talented maverick. Anybody with any corrections to the above let me know, I'm going from memory here

He always says that he bought it as a reminder that you just need to devote yourself to the art and not worry about success or franchising, but I think it's just a symbol, an eternal reminder of the fact he was happy once.

Was it scorched? I don't think the flames that engulfed it were just visual effects.

There were four Rosebuds. Three were made of balsa for the final scene and one was made of pine for the opening scene. Reportedly, two of the balsa sleds were consumed by flames and the third one was bought by Spielberg. The pine sled was sold at auction in 1996 for $233K.

Interesting tidbit: Herman Mankiewicz once had a bicycle named Rosebud. It was stolen when he was 10 years old. His father refused to buy him another, blaming him for carelessness.
