Anyone here have an opinion on the Criterion blu for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

I've got my eye on that one for the July Barnes & Noble sale.

I don't really like the cover art that much and the special features seem just...okay.

How's the transfer on a scale from 1 to 10?

Dammit! Another possible title yanked by paramount.

It's a top notch transfer. The movie is the key though...one of my favorite Gilliam films. It didn't garner the best reviews upon its release but there are some sequences in that movie that still make me laugh out loud. Something about the film is timeless to me.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the only Gilliam film I actually like, so I would say definitely go for it. I don't own the Blu-ray, though, so I cannot comment on the picture/audio quality.

I think IFC will still have some titles go thru Criterion. Remember the huge legal court battle for La Dolce Vita. Paramount won the battle for U.S. rights and who put out the BLU? Criterion.

That just means for IFC titles CC will release the deals will go thru Paramount.

That being said, I really don't care for 98% off the IFC films catalog, and would rather Criterion concentrate on other releases than IFC titles.

Fear and Loathing has one of the, if not the, best supplement packages on any DVD/Blu. I know so many people who usually couldn't care less about special features, but got the CC edition. Some aren't even fans of the movie, but love the features.

I watched Elevator to the Gallows for the first time, also my first Louis Malle, a day ago. I really liked it. It had a feeling of film noir crossed with Hitchcock. It's fun to get caught up in the tense, unraveling plot focusing on multiple characters and their predicaments, all while marveling at the gorgeous lighting and beautiful black and white cinematography of nighttime Paris. Miles Davis contributes a sparingly used but energetically jazzy score that especially highlights Jeanne Moreau's lonely and desperate search for her lover. Speaking of Moreau, she definitely is the soul of the film and has an iconic face perfect for film noir. Though I must say, and it has nothing to do with Moreau's lack of makeup (she still looks sexy and honestly I didn't even notice), I found myself drawn to the teenage girl, who looked just adorable. There are a few lapses in logic with regards to the plot like
[Show spoiler]Tavernier forgetting the rope in the first place and then leaving the car running to go retrieve it, and the photo of him and Moreau's character together at the end in the hotel.
Additionally, the film could be a little more captivating than it is. Also this isn't a slight to the film of course but I hate that my TCM recording cut off the very end (where
[Show spoiler]the photo of Moreau and her lover is revealed and she will be going to jail
), though I get the gist of what happened. Overall, a solid, classic film noir crime drama, and one I would pick up if Criterion upgraded it to Blu-ray.

4.25/5

I also have Au Revoir, les Enfants on the DVR, so I may watch that next.

It could also mean that Paramount will get the first release, and then a Criterion will follow a few years later. That seems to be the plan for Boyhood.

IFC is a mixed bag for me. They get some good releases, like these two and Revanche that was discussed a page or two ago, and some mediocre. I like that they are releasing modern content, just wish they had more to choose from.

IMO Au Revoir is in a different league. Elevator is good but Au Revoir is phenomenal.

I can't say enough about the disc. The whole package is quite amazing. Pro-B gave the transfer 4 out of 5 stars on his review here: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Fear-.../19911/#Review

As for me, it's as close to a 10 as you can get without being a 10... but I really give it a 10 because it looks great on my plasma. And i give a BIG 10 to the supplements. It's as close a perfect package as you can get.

yes.. what jhiggy said here.

I am actually guilt of having a little bit of a counter reaction (counter to what seems like the popular opinion) as to my feelings with Elevator to the Gallows. It is a very good film and Moreau is incredible in it, but IMO, calling it Malle's best is almost a slight to Malle who never really seemed to make the same film twice.

Au Revoir, les Enfants and Lacombe, Lucien are more polished, more personal films. Atlantic City and Murmur of the Heart might even be better, too.

It is a Warner Brothers title, so I guess that means it will be released by no one.
I'm holding out for a Warner Archive disc. They never released Fearless in widescreen on DVD, but it got a WAC release. Same with Running on Empty, so there's hope, I guess/

Just found out about the BFI release of Germany, Pale Mother, has there been any buzz about Criterion releasing this?

I too would add Lacombe over Elevator.

Received Carlos today (along with Pitch Perfect). I think I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to dig in. I mean, 5-1/2 hours ... and then about a million extras. This may be an entire weekend-long project.

Appreciate the great response.

I based my opinion of the special features off the fact that there doesn't seem to be a typical making-of type featurette where the actors and director talk about the story and the characters and all of that good stuff.

...those are my favorite special features.

Very disappointed by this news. Criterion have already filmed a bunch of extras for it too. Hopefully it's still coming, the film is one of 2015's best thus far.
