Tough to say, without it being narrowed down. I'd be glad to help though!

Went easy on my wallet this time around with the B&N 50% off deals.
In the past I was guilty of binge buying (10 or more titles at a time) but that was mainly just to get caught up on Criterion classic titles. I've slowed down considerably and this time out limited my purchase to just 3 titles.

Five Easy Pieces (Blu-ray)
Mouchette
Carl Theodore Dreyer Collection

Last night I sat down and watched Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. I approached the film with a little trepidation: the only other Fassbinder film I had even seen was Querelle, which I frankly found incomprehensible and more than just a little weird, what with the highly stylized set decorations, the portentous title cards and the obnoxious repetition of the song lyric, "Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves."

I needn't have worried. Ali was completely captivating. The performances were incisive; the direction, inspired; the cinematography, stunning; and the script, both straightforward and thought-provoking. Criterion's transfer was simply gorgeous, and the supplements were educational and enjoyable. I especially appreciated the interview with Todd Haynes, whose insights into Fassbinder and the era in which he worked, were fascinating. Haynes' contribution reminded me of what a magnificent job he did with Far From Heaven, and how much that film deserves a place in the Collection.

If anyone has been thinking about adding Ali: Fear Eats the Soul to their library, consider it highly recommended by yours truly. I'm now motivated to give some of Fassbinder's other films a try, particularly those available on blu-ray from Criterion.

Bought Shoah and Tokyo Story off of Amazon, which make my fourth and fifth Criterion respectively. And I still haven't got a region free Blu-ray player. Dammit.

I wanted to take a trip to my local B&N tomorrow but I've never gone to the store to pick up Criterions during the sale. But I just signed up for the free 2 month membership and was curious if anyone knows whether I'll face any problems trying to use that for the 10% discount along with the 8 off $40 and 15% off one time coupons (I plan on buying at least 3 movies).

It seems like they overlook combining coupons/discounts but I wasn't sure if the new membership would make a difference as well.

You shouldn't have any problems at all with the two-month membership. It'll work exactly the same as the regular membership minus the snail mail coupons. You should be able to get the 10% member discount and use the coupon as well. The membership is made to stack, so you should be able to use any coupon in conjunction with the 10% off.

Keep in mind that noir is a genre a do not care for, so you should factor that in when considering my opinion. Others on here love noir and have an incredible knowledge base about same, so their opinion might mean more.

Thanks for all the advice and thoughts. Picked up a few more.

Anatomy of a Murder, Hoop Dreams and It Happened One Night.

I have seen Hoop Dreams many years ago late at night on PBS when I was just a kid, maybe 13. I remember watching it and being so intrigued. It was my first viewing of a documentary. From then I was hooked. Can't wait to watch this again.

Really am looking to pick up Red River, Tokyo Story, An Autumn Afternoon, Late Spring, My Darling Clementine, Jules and Jim and Paris, Texas.

Excuse the fact that my phone autocorrected "did not" to "duder!"

I can't believe I still haven't seen Hoop Dreams, especially being a basketball, documentary, and Ebert fan.

Your list at the end is excellent. Jules and Jim I wasn't a huge fan of and although I like My Darling, I don't feel the desire to own it. The others are great choices.

Federico Fellini's 1960 classic film La Dolce Vita will be remade. According to Deadline, the Fellini estate and AMBI Group principals Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi have closed an option agreement that allows AMBI Group and producer Daniele Di Lorenzo's LDM Productions to begin working on the upcoming "homage".

Francesca Fellini, niece of Federico Fellini, commented: "We've been approached countless times and asked to consider everything from remakes and re-imaginings to prequels and sequels. We knew it would take very special producers and compelling circumstances to motivate the family to allow rights to be optioned. Daniele, Andrea and Monika have a beautiful vision of a modern film, and considering their Italian heritage and deep appreciation and understanding of my uncle's works, there couldn't be a better alignment for this project."

"Our vision is of a contemporary story every bit as commercial, iconic and award-worthy as the original. These are big aspirations of course, but we have to be bold if we want to match the imprint of the original film and have the utmost confidence this vision will play out beautifully. We're thankful to the Fellini family and eager to begin collaborating with Daniele, who shares our passion and has been so amazing in bringing this to us," said Iervolino.

Note: Fellini's was restored in 4K by Cineteca di Bologna - Laboratorio L'Immagine Ritrovata in 2010, in association with The Film Foundation, Pathe, Fondation Jerome Seydoux-Pathe, Mediaset-Medusa, Paramount Pictures, Cinecitta Luce, and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale. Restoration funding was provided by Gucci and The Film Foundation. In the United States, the recent restoration of La Dolce Vita is out on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. You can see our listing and review of this release here. In the United Kingdom, the restoration is available on Blu-ray courtesy of local distributors Nouveaux Pictures.

No problem! You should definitely go in to the store though, even if you planned on ordering online, because you can do a ship-to-home order ($19.99), use your 10% off membership discount (another $2, which you can't get online), and then your coupon; so you'll actually save more if you can get to a store.

I highly recommend it as I love documentaries and basketball as well. Ozu is great. Still haven't seen Autumn but can't wait based on Ozu's other films. Darling caught my eye bc I like westerns and Fonda. The only Truffaut I have seen is 400 Blows so I wanted to pick up something else of his for sure.

EDIT: Not true, I have seen Fahrenheit 451

Oh absolutely. I only got the free membership by placing an order online this week for a couple of movies I wanted. It was only afterward that I realized I could probably stack coupons in store for some more movies with the new membership.

City Lights

Do you feel that Hoops is rewatchable? As a three hour documentary, I'm curious.
