Who here collects Eclipse sets? I had only one thus far (Early Bergman), but now that I don't have a need for in-print Criterions, I am thinking of collecting these.

Picked up Early Fassbinder and Oshima's Outlaw 60s from B&N.

It feels weird buying these because most of the movies are on Hulu, but they look good on the shelf, aren't too expensive (especially with the sale) and I just like having the movies.

I only have a few Japanese ones, but they're all great sets. Nikkatsu Noir, The First Films of Kurosawa, Post-war Kurosawa, Silent Ozu: Three Family Comedies, and Late Ozu.

Late Ozu is my favorite, just so many great films. I'm looking to get the last Ozu eclipse set, Silent Ozu: Three Crime Dramas, during the B&N sale. The only thing I don't like about the Eclipse sets are the lack of a bottom in the slipcase. They can easily fall out if not handled properly.

The movie takes awhile to figure out what is going on, but is a such a great movie IMO and so unlike anything else. There's this authenticity to it that makes it feel like someone had a camera in medieval times to film it.

I love the eclipse sets. For a small price I get a bunch of movies to watch. Definitely recommend Nikkatsu Noir, Postwar Kurosawa or the Koreyoshi Kurahara set. Then again I have a certain preference for Japanese movies and love film noir as well which both sets, besides the Kurosawa set, present. You definitely see the American influence in these pulpy movies.

Marketa Lazarová is a wonderful film.

The first time I watched the film, I shut it off after approximately an hour. The second time, however, I was glued from start to finish.

The film does require multiple viewings, in my opinion, in order to fully comprehend the mystery that is shrouded around the entire film. Furthermore, I believe that once each character is easily identified, the viewing experience is much more easier.

what should I pick up? better question - what do you think I'd like?

I like the idea of purchasing a lot of what many feel to be the American classics. I will watch a film made from anywhere, but I'd rather test out something (library, Netflix) that would qualify as quite different for me. That is, unless it is from a highly regarded director.

With that said, I've been a bit on the fence about Sullivan's Travels. I loved It Happened One Night... not sure how similar this one might be stylistically or appeal-wise.

Other than that, I was mildly curious about Odd Man Out, although I didn't think Fallen Idol was a very good film, so I'm hesitant.

I was all set to pick up Every Man For Himself, but the first 10 minutes of Godard's newest film has scared me to death about his relatively newer stuff.

Maybe The Killers. I enjoy noir. Don't exactly know how essential this one is.

I've thought about picking up the Nikkatsu Noir set, but haven't done so yet. I'm not particularly fond of Japanese cinema, but I did like Tokyo Drifter. I do like noir and pulpy movies, too, so for the right price, I might still pull the trigger.

..and I've said a few times that the Satyajit Ray eclipse set is pretty darn good. decent transfers, too. got really high PQ marks on the "other site."

Thanks guys. Late Ozu, Nikkatsu Noir, and all the others are all on my eye. I'm also interested in Late Ray, Lubitsch Musicals, Pearls of the Czech New Wave, the Kinoshita one, and the upcoming Varda set. Some real good sets out there.

Janus Films has found a 16mm print of Sawdust and Tinsel so maybe we'll see a Blu-ray release in the future.

Any thoughts on The Confession?

Such a beautiful cover design on the case.

Not many reviews on the film.

I've seen Z...liked it, didn't necessarily love it.

I love Z, but I wasn't particularly keen on The Confession or State of Siege.

Although I'm not the biggest fan of political thrillers, I definitely found it to have its good, mysterious, and haunting moments. Overall, though, I was left a bit more disappointed and disinterested in the story than anything else.

Love Ray, but have yet to pick up the set. All his films I've seen have amazing PQ with wonderful contrast and details.

Watched Valerie and Her Week of Wonders last night. Not sure what to think. Never been much of a fan of abstract art with extremely unconventional story telling. Though I find Last Year at Marianbad fun to watch due to its elegance and it is a haunting experience. Read many reviews saying Valerie was like a dream and since I love Dreyers Vampyre ( Need a Bluray Criterion! ) which is like a filmed Nightmare I decided to give Valerie a chance. Will have to watch it again though as I was utterly confused through the whole thing. The imagery, bright colors and symbolism is great in it, but like Marienbad the characters and story refuse to stand still. Is the Polecat the young boys father or not or is he the girls father. Are they brother and sister or are they not. etc Very confusing stuff.

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but is the standalone for Five Easy Pieces identical to the disc in the BBS set?

Nearly identical. It includes a 28 min featurette that's found on the disc for Head from the set

I loved Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, it was cool enough just for the visuals for sure. I even like the Music only re-scored bonus audio channel for this release. I just turn off the subtitles for that version and actually have set the sleep timer a few nights watching that version. The image quality is great on this release. It was a film I'd never heard of until Criterion announced it, and as soon as I read the synopsis I knew it was a blind buy.

Anyone else having trouble with the B&N website? It keeps saying my card isn't authorized. Have ordered many times in the past with no problems.

Other then Every Man for Himself, I can safely recommend the other three. Just for the B&W cinematography alone Odd Man Out and the first The Killers is a joy to watch. Surges Sullivan's Travels, great sharp dialogue and chemistry between the two leads. Word of warnng on the extras on The Killers, if a certain deragatory word to describe black people offends you, you may want skip the Stacy Keach narration and the Tarkosvky version. I understood its context, but I wasnt expecting it since I never read the short story.
