If they continue to split that box up, then I would think "Marvin Gardens" would be the most likely to get a standalone after "Last Picture Show" and "Five Easy Pieces". "Easy Rider" already has a pretty good standalone non-Criterion release, so I doubt they would release that by itself. Nicholson and Dern would probably make the film a decent seller.

I can't recommend the BBS set enough though. "Head" is a fun relic of the late 60s that's worth a watch. "Drive, He Said" and "A Safe Place" are both true pieces of shit, particularly "A Safe Place", but, despite the presence of those two films, it's a phenomenal box set.

I'm just of the mindset that there's more to life than PTA, Malick, and Lynch.
I mentioned it just because it's one of the ones I hear requested the most, but I get what you mean. And yet... isn't that the whole point? That the films we already know are gonna be the ones we request the most? It's Criterion's job to put out the films that we may not be as familiar with.

And in defense of Hard Eight, while I'm not a big fan of the film, I think my inner idealist would love to live in a world where every film gets a decent home video release. Sadly, it looks like the studios aren't willing to put in the effort for some of the films of PTA, Malick, Lynch, and others. Even if I don't buy them, I'm glad Criterion is out there fighting the good fight and doing the Lord's work.

Is the boxset going OOP? Is that why we got an individual release of Five Easy Pieces?

There have been rumors about Criterion losing the rights to "Head", making the whole box go OOP. It's an amazing box set and, if you're into special features, it just has an incredible amount of terrific extras.

Sony doesn't own HEAD (Rhino does), they licensed it way back when they were going to release the BBS set themselves, so once that deal is up it is entirely possible that the box set will go out of print. (I personally think it is telling that the individual release of FIVE EASY PIECES has the BBS doc from the HEAD disc.)

With Dressed to Kill coming out next month and it not being included in this October announcement, I'm worried it'll be at least a year, if not more, till we see it.
Im so close to picking up the DVD before this sale ends since im not sure how long until it hits BD if it ever does.

I had to let this day sink in before I could post here...

And I am still ecstatic over October's announcements.

Not only is one of my all-time favorite movies now on blu-ray, but its in the Criterion Collection: Mulholland Dr.. Yes, what hasn't been said yet about this film and all the excitement surrounding? You've seen it, you've heard it, you've felt it, basically there's nothing more I can add that you don't already know. After nearly a year of waiting (since that one clue from 2014), I am now only recovering from my day-long state of shock. And the artwork? I think its great, esp. those two signs, with the "David Lynch's" going the opposite direction.

And when there's Lynch, Cronenberg is not far behind...yes, that other David. Nearly on that same level of horror and strangeness. The Brood, his early horror classic. A Halloween treat to go along with...

Kwaidan. Wow. Talk about a double, no, triple feature of horror and fright. I have not seen this film yet but what I see about it is intriguing.

Then when I thought I was fully stuffed with contentment, along comes the upgrade to My Own Private Idaho, which has been on my wishlist for years, for Criterion to upgrade to blu-ray. My dream is finally coming true. This is a beautiful film that will reap the full benefits of a high definition 4k transfer.

Finally, A Special Day, the only film I don't know anything about. Worthy of a rental of course.

A special month indeed though, one of the best in years in my opinion. There are some doozies coming out in October. Thankfully the November B&N 50% off sale will help in saving on many of these releases.

However, do they think that movie comes with enough discs? I mean, sure, the box says it is almost as long as a Peter Jackson film, but 5 discs?
That was when they were doing the Blu-ray/dvd combo packaging, so 3 DVD's. I'd rather have had a nice 2 disc digipack or 2 disc case.

Kwaidan! Been wanting to see that for ages but have been waiting out for a BD release! Harakiri is a perfect movie in my opinion, and I love horror, so it sounds like a winning combo!

What amazes me is how slim that 5 disk set is... especially when you put it next to later dual format digipacks!

Glad to see Kwaidan getting an upgrade and A Special Day is a film I've not heard of but definitely sounds the sort of thing I would like.

Glad for MD though I have the SC digibook already so will be keeping a keen eye on reviews and extras

My Beautiful Laundrette Blu-ray REVIEW

Excellent release

The 2K restoration is very good and the Blu-ray represents a massive upgrade in quality over the old MGM disc. The strength of this release, however, is in the extras department. Fantastic interviews. The one with Hanif Kureishi, in particular, is invaluable. Frears also had some excellent comments about Lindsay Anderson, Karel Reisz, Thatcher's legacy, etc.

An hour of quality supplemental features is always preferable over three hours of random talk.

A must-buy release.

Lovely set of announcements. This is probably the first time I will likely pick up every release that month. I'll undoubtedly need to leave some for a sale though. October is looking insane just from Arrow and Criterion's releases. Still plenty more labels with stuff to announce.

I've received a copy of La Dolce Vita blu-ray from B&N that was already out of its shrink wrap, cracked case, scratched disc, and the disc holder broken too.

So can anyone guide me where I can get a replacement case like the one TCC uses for their blu-rays? I'm out of the U.S. so can't go directly to the distributor.

Thanks.

I would hope so too. But, I think that Eclipse is a way for Criterion to put out films that they have the licenses to but either think they won't sell as much on the mainline, or they don't have a good enough copy to release on the mainline. Sadly, the first one is where I see Naruse fitting in. I don't think Criterion sees him as a big seller so Eclipse is really the only hope.

That's something you have to bring to their attention. It's one thing for it to be damaged in shipment, but to send you a copy that one would barely consider in "acceptable condition" is bad.
