There's a $10 off $75 coupon that expires Friday (BNSUN75). There shiuld be standard 15% off coupons next week. This is definitely the best thread to inquire:

Does Criterion has rights to Shampoo? Twilight Time already indicated they could not obtain it. I'm thinking perhaps Criterion at some point since they released it on Laserdisc.

This is off-topic, but I figured some of the noir-heads in here might like to know that Double Indemnity is going to be in theaters nationwide 7/19-7/20!!!!!

I just found the first Criterion I bought in a box. Thought I lost it because I was moving so much. It's Harlan County USA. Sad thing is that the DVD case is all beat up. I was thinking of buying a clear DVD case to match the clear Blu-ray and DVD cases from Criterion. Like the case for White Dog. Does anyone know of where you could buy them?

I can't recommend the BBS set enough though. "Head" is a fun relic of the late 60s that's worth a watch. "Drive, He Said" and "A Safe Place" are both true pieces of shit, particularly "A Safe Place", but, despite the presence of those two films, it's a phenomenal box set.
Drive, He Said and A Safe Place are indeed turds. I think Criterion might give another film from the set an individual release. I'd be interested in seeing how many people would pay for Head.

Not Criterion related but I figured I'd post it here as this thread is always up for discussion.

Just got done watching Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and absolutely hated it. Spoilers below (I guess):

[Show spoiler]Why is every character in this movie sedated? Is this how the Thai really communicate with eachother? If so, cancel my next trip to Thailand. Why is Boonmee acting casual when his dead wife and son show up as ghosts at the dinner table? The way the characters act is so nonchalant and again, sedated that it's hard to care about these people. They don't even seem human. Endless shots that go nowhere. What does people sitting around watching TV or riding around in a car have to do with ANYTHING? I just recently watched L'atalante and A Day In The Country and these films have real people that make you feel alive. This has all the worst cliches of modern art films with none of the virtues. Buyers beware.

Charulata is top notch. I quite like Il Sorpasso, and The Vanishing is decent; I haven't seen the other two.

I remember loving it - not watched since it came out though.

Pretty sure it wasn't meant to be rue reflection of people and how we live our lives - it had a lot of symbology and also reflected thai beliefs and stuff, maybe if you was thai it would make more sense?

But yeah, I remember adoring the film. I loved the imagery it had and the themes it touched upon.

I just ordered my 200th Criterion blu-ray, The BBS Story boxed set, and I'd like to have my Criterion blu-rays together with my 26 Criterion DVDs in one unit.

By the way, I notice you have your collection alphabetized ... me, too! I started to arrange them by spine number, but decided against it. It makes it too hard for me to find anything ...
I bought this off Amazon for my Criterions...

I like you too mate, and none of this is meant with any disrespect. I'm enjoying the debate.

THAT being said....

That Bates is also responding in the same way as I am must surely suggest that the problem lies with your point tho? Or are both of us mistaken?

BUT WHAT IS YOUR POINT?!? Mulholland Dr. is a positive example of crossover cultural success surely? You said you were a fan of it, so presumably that playing on a mainstream platform like a multiplex cinema is a good thing?! Surely that contradicts the spoon fed remark?! I'M CONFUSED!

Ozu (alongside Kurosawa) is pretty much the first thing one would encounter when exploring classic Japanese cinema. He's certainly among the most famous, with Tokyo Story one of the first Japanese films any young cinephile will likely have a run in with. I'd say the same was true of Bunuel, regarding experimental cinema or surrealism. Un Chien Andalou is a film studies staple, while DISCREET and OBSCURE are staples of world cinema. I know that for me Bunuel led to Guy Maddin, Stan Brakhage, etc.

For me my test is my (non-cinephile) wife. If she knows who someone is then I'd say they were pretty well-known.

I too am a big fan, but do recognise how divisive it is. I saw it at an early morning press show in London a few years ago, and a big chunk of the audience could be heard snoring from around 20 minutes in or so!

Bonus fact: Apichatpong Weerasethakul stood me up at lunch that day. I was supposed to be interviewing him about the film and he never showed up.

I'd be willing to bet a whole lot of people would pay a lot more than 40 bucks for Head, depending on who you talk to.

That depends on the situation. I might if it included 3 Women.

[Show spoiler]You did that on purpose.

I know it was the reason posted on here in the past, and It seems the most logical. If they're not basing it off inventory, that would imply that they're replacing a title despite potentially having a lot of unsold inventory of the Dual Format releases in their warehouse. If it's not inventory, I wonder what other factor it might be?

Someone on here had one in their photo gallery and also thought it was cool. I contacted the guy who makes them by hand and ordered one. Blu-ray Mini Marquee is the product. Google will pop it up.

The standard blu-rays look awesome with it. The Criterions are a little taller and the clear cases don't illuminate like the blue ones.

Happy Early Birthday! Mine is this weekend, and when my family asked me where I wanted to go eat to celebrate, I "accidently" chose a restaurant a few hundred yards away from Barnes & Noble! My sister-in-law just laughed and rolled her eyes ... I don't get away with much these days.
