I would say that the Three Colors trilogy is one of the safest blind buys, but it is not one that be consumed quickly and have an opinion right away. I remember when I first saw them, I put some space between Blue, White and finally the amazing Red, and it made them more impactful. All of them get better on repeat viewings, especially Red.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the other three films. Maybe Blue is a better starting point?

I apologize if this has already been discussed, (it's a huge thread ya know). but are the dual format editions being reiussed as separate BD/DVD releases? I just bought Foreign Correspondent and it is BD only. But a couple others that I bought are in fact dual format. I guess I'm in the minority but I kind of with they would continue the dual format releases. Oh well.

Incorrect. The DVD version, per Mulvaney, was zoomed in on that scene to hide the boom at the top. Criterion opted not to do so because it altered the composition of the scene, and others, too dramatically; detail was lost on the side and top of the screen. The supposed framing issues were deliberate, in an attempt to recreate the film as close to how it appeared in theaters.
The DVD version has significantly less detail and cinematic feel, and represents the tinkering of those that did the transfer, altering the original and purposeful look of the film. Inferior? Certainly not. |

Like trash? Well, that's not the general consensus.
But would you believe someone who insists they remember the exact placement of a logo on a black screen from their viewing of the film in the cinema 20 years earlier? Especially if that person most likely watch the zoomed in DVD multiple times, probably changing their memory, in the years between seeing the movie in the cinema and viewing the blu ray? |
