For those that have seen Out 1: how would you describe it? What compares to it?

As one might expect of a film of this length it's quite slow, to the point where it might be a problem for some (the film is full of lengthy scenes of a performance being rehearsed; these scenes killed it for a friend of mine who abandoned his screening a few hours in), but that aside it's a fairly conventionally put together piece of work.

Have you seen any Rivette at all? His work is pretty singular, but I don't think it's a million miles away from Godard (his closest comparison of the New Wave filmmakers) or Resnais. In fact I don't think his work is as challenging as that of Resnais' more experimental features.

Carlotta have also released a trailer for their release, so that ought to give you *some* idea about what it's like.

Rivette is a blind spot for me. Mainly because I don't have access to his films on video and they haven't played at the cinematheque.

Didn't see it mentioned, but Arrow has a Rivette collection planned as well. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-J...lu-ray/138415/

thanks for this info, Adam, and also for the trailer. it looks pretty cool. I'd definitely like to give it a chance.

I don't mind artfully done "slow" as long as it leads somewhere. ...and I don't necessarily mind vague, but I'm somehow imagining this film to be very challenging. like Godard's Weekend-type challenging.

would you say that the dialogue is philosophical (like Rohmer's My Night at Maud's) or very poetic (like Pierrot Le Fou or other Godard?)

oh, and political? sorry to ask so many questions. I can handle all of these things, but maybe not for 6 or 7 or how many ever hours... and $70 or so USD as a blind buy is a lot.

I've never thought of his work as political in the same sense that Godard's is. I'd say this is closer in style to Weekend than Pierrot Le Fou, but I don't think it's particularly challenging in terms of form, with the running time being the only truly challenging factor.

I would recommend checking out Le Pont du Nord, which is widely available on Blu-ray to get an idea as to whether or not Rivette is for you.

This is what I was referring to above, when I said that the US set isn't as lavish as the UK one.

The only one I have seen is Le Pont du Nord, and really couldn't get into it, a lot of things happen for no apparent reason, is Out 1 similar?

Edit: Just saw this:

So I guess it is no blind buy candidate for me

Watched Cronos yesterday and was somewhat disappointed. I know it was del Toro's first feature so I can cut the guy some slack. It seemed more like a TV movie than what I anticipated. I was entertained and liked the spin on a vampire story, but his growth as a director (and budget I am sure) was apparent between this and Devil's Backbone.

I'll give Le Pont du Nord a chance. I don't mind things happening for no apparent reason as long as the scenes are cohesive within themselves.

My favourite aspect of Rivette's films is that he does surrealism in such a "light" way, if that makes any sense. He goes over the edge without you noticing sometimes. Out 1 can break some people and the run time will definitely turn a lot of people away. I've had a lot of discussions about it, have seen many people mad as well. I think it's safe to say if you're new to the man's work and are weary to start elsewhere! Sort of incredible it's coming out on blu, can't wait for Arrows release.

It's horrible. Basically a day-long filmed "theatrical" performance by unpleasant, self-conscious "interesting" (i.e.: annoying) people, mostly young and beautiful. I enjoyed some of this other films (have seen about six) but they all try my patience with their basic theatrical archness and unpleasant characters. There's some interesting Lynchian disruptions of "reality" in many of his films, but the negative attributes smother any other positive merits.

Perhaps similar to this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbiopsychotaxiplasm

But nowhere near as concise or layered or interesting.

If I can survive Bela Tarr then I think I can handle Rivette.

My Criterion Blu-ray of Dressed to Kill arrived in the mail from Amazon today.
...and it's the first printing.

*sigh*

I was really hoping that I would not have to deal with this.

I could return this to Amazon, or I could email Criterion for a replacement disc. I think that I'll do the latter and get the replacement disc straight from Criterion, since I know that they'll send me the correct one. While I'm at it, I'll request compensation from Amazon...perhaps a $10 credit for my inconvenience.

Argh.

I like Bela Tarr, but find Satantango to be far too irritating and tedious. It's weird, especially as I'm a great fan of Jeanne Dielman, but with that (and Out 1) I find the rhythm of the work far easier to slip in to.

Finished watching Hiroshima mon Amour at lunch today. It is going to get a 2nd viewing because I totally must have missed what has garnered so much praise.

Beautifully shot...beautiful actress...beautiful dialogue...so boring. I had a difficult time getting into this and I wonder if it because I was put off by the adulterous encounter from the get go. He should have been happy at the end because
[Show spoiler]she is damaged goods.

Any rebuttals?

I love his films (quite different beast entirely though) but just find it hilarious it can be said "Look, I've watched Bela Tarr films. Bela. Tarr. I can sit through anything." It's a cinematic war medal? Never have I seen so many people walk out on a film than the times I went to the theater for one of his. I'd personally much rather watch his stuff at home alone really

Tarr is a derivative snooze. It's like he saw a Tarkovsky tracking shot once and built his entire "career" around that and nothing else, without understanding why Tarkovsky made films the way he did.
