Red Beard and Ikiru are the only two films I've ever seen that actually made me reevaluate the way I live my life.

...would love to see on the big screen.

Saw Crimson Peak over the weekend. Really enjoyed it. The CGI didn't bother me one bit. As others have said it's not really a horror movie, rather a grande old-fashioned melodrama. It looks great and the performances are material apt too.

I'm a big fan of Tarantino and have never understood the snark thrown his way. Sure, he says some strange, annoying things, but I think that's all part of his character. Tarantino ranked -

1. Django
2. Inglourious Basterds
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Kill Bill vol. 2
5. Jackie Brown
6. Kill Bill vol. 1
7. Reservoir Dogs
8. Death Proof

Despite it being at the bottom of my ranking I still do like Death Proof a great deal. I just rewatched it too, for shocktober, and got much out of it. I think it's an important work within his oeuvre too, as this LWLies article argues. http://www.littlewhitelies.co.uk/fea...th-proof-31506
That's a stunning list to me.

Django Unchained at #1 and Reservoir Dogs at the bottom?

...to each his own.

I could listen to her voice in that film basically all day - even if she were just reading the phone book.
Scarlett definitely has the sexiest voice. I am a big fan of her. You hear her voice a lot (no wonder he fell in love with his phone...), but unfortunately she doesn't appear on camera.

Not really (at all) Criterion related, but my fellow film fans will appreciate this package that arrived today:

Dog Day Afternoon (40th Anniversary Edition)
The Conversation
Poltergeist

Default Latest criterion releases

I hardly ever post any comments, but love reading everyone elses :-) i Have three things to say..

Gilda looks to be a great film and will buy that.

I love Tarantino's movies and loved Deathproof!

Sadly, every month I hope for a Criterion release of Decalogue. I wonder if it's still even in the works?

Thanks for a great forum folks!

Lost in Translation is in my list of top 20 favorite films of all time. It's an absolutely beautiful movie and at times can be a meditation, despite some of the prejudicial themes directed towards Japanese people in the film (at least I was told this by a Japanese woman once, who said there is tons of racism/misogyny in the movie). I don't care what Sofia Coppola's views are on that society, because I just absolutely love this film, and its a work of art, if not a masterpiece. If it came to Criterion, I'd be floored.

Last night I unwrapped Breaker Morant and watched it in its entirety. At first I was expecting something along the lines of Paths of Glory (which it is somewhat similar to in themes), but it turned out to be something else completely different.

Tonight I will watch all the supplements and learn about the Boer - English wars of the early 20th century and hopefully have some more to say tomorrow about this stunning Bruce Beresford film (the acting was tremendous).

In the Mood for Love and Lost in Translation constantly switch positions for my favorite film of all-time. Every time I watch them, I feel like nothing else matters in the world. They're both so bittersweet, happy, and heartbreaking for me and I truly think that they touch at larger issues, such as human connections, the unpredictability of life, and cherishing time and the little moments.

It's amazing, but I don't have the same connection that I do with these two.

I've had Lost in Translation sitting on my shelf for about a month or 2 & haven't seen it yet. You just made me move it to the top of my watch list.

I agree with a great deal of this post, and the part quoted above is a particularly well made point. The film sags a bit and loses the intended feel in the extended standalone version.

To get more directly on topic, I'd like to ask:

Are there any good examples of over-the-top schlock fests in The Criterion Collection, a la Grindhouse?

Fiend Without a Face comes to mind with a very unique monster(s). Also the Eclipse set When Horror Came To Shochiku. All these are DVDs.

Watched Valerie and her Weeks of Wonders last night on TCM.

Gave up trying to follow the plot after about 20 minutes and just let myself enjoy the surrealist imagery.

It was uh...interesting.

Glad I saw it.

...even gladder I saved myself from an unnecessary blind buy.

The ultimate "What could have been?" scenario...

I'm watching a Barbara Steele interview that is one of the special features on the Nightmare Castle Blu-ray.

After briefly discussing her work with Federico Fellini in , Steele mentioned that Michelangelo Antonioni had intended for direct her in a horror movie where she would co-star with Monica Vitti.

Sadly, this horror film project never came to fruition.

*sigh*

That had a lot of potential to be a classic for sure.

I would recommend In the Mood for Love even if you despised Lost in Translation. It's fantastic. In fact, you really can't go wrong with anything by WKW.
