I first saw it several years ago on TCM and loved it from that first viewing and sang it's praises here when It was first announced as a future CC title. Montgomery's character of Gagin, in the best noir tradition, is out to settle a score and doesn't want or need anyone's help but there are good people who manage to crack his tough exterior and unselfishly come to his aid. Some good noir regulars in this-Thomas Gomez (Key Largo, Force of Evil). Art Smith (Brute Force, In a Lonely Place) and Fred Clark (White Heat).
I think it's one of the best noirs that virtually nobody ever heard of before it showed up on Criterion's radar. I only knew about it because I was a big fan of Robert Montgomery and had read that it was one of his few directing/starring films and desperately wanted to see it but never had the chance to until TCM showed it a couple of times.
So give it another chance, Scottie.

I really loved it. When I was a kid I used to love stumbling across old movies at 2am and this is exactly what that felt like. It scratched that 'late, late show' itch in a way Night and the City didn't quite accomplish.

And I'm not going to tell you to run out and buy just for the transfer but it looked damned good. Neither the cinematography nor the transfer were of that 'omg, you have to see the BD, nothing else will do' variety but they were pretty close at times. It definitely struck me as one of those black-and-white movies that really benefits from a good HD transfer (though I can't say for sure never having seen a DVD or broadcast or what have you).

Picked up the Mulholland Drive Blu Ray and noticed there's several scenes with a lot of flickering and noise. Anyone know if this was intentional or just a problem with the transfer?

In the olden days (pre-cable and VHS) that was a treasure trove of undiscovered films on those Early/Late Show time slots. Our stations were primarily Warner and RKO (re-titled C&C Television) titles. That's where I first discovered noir before I even knew what noir was. All I knew was they looked different with lots of shadows and stairs so they were "Shadows and Stairs" films to me. Good times.

I defy anyone here to name a scene from any film in the Criterion collection that has more heat.

Criterion would need to construct a special fire-retardant disc just to ensure that the heat in this scene alone didn't set your blu-ray player on fire.

...it's just sad that there are so many little boys here who can't handle this level of emotional intensity.

And of course we always mock what don't understand.

[Show spoiler]
The funniest thing about that scene is Tom Cruise playing volleyball.

ETA: Just to be clear, the greatest women's beach volleyball pair ever, Misty May and Kerri Walsh, were 5'9" and 6'3" respectively. And the net is shorter in the women's game.

All I know is that the idea that there are any homoerotic undertones of any kind running through Top Gun is the most blatantly ridiculous thing I've ever read on this forum.

I simply don't go for movies that have any kind of gay or lesbian underpinnings of any kind.

Not that there's anything wrong with that--because there isn't.

But as a red-blooded, muscle-car driving, UFC-watching, stone-cold-stunning American male...I'm just not into those kinds of films.

Now if you'll excuse me, I finally pulled the trigger on The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant.

...I'm very excited to watch it tonight for the first time.

No, No, NO!

Apparently 20th Century-Fox is going to remake Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, with Kenneth Branaugh directing and playing the role of Hercule Poirot.

Why, with all the superb Agatha Christie mysteries that have never been adapted for the screen, would they choose to green-light a remake of a film that was done perfectly the first time? Have they not studied the Law of Diminishing Returns that so sadly applied to Christie's superb And Then There Were None (1945), its lukewarm remake as Ten Little Indians (1965), and its abysmal third (1974) and fourth (1989) screen incarnations?

I've been secretly holding out hope that Criterion might pick up the rights to the Oscar-winning 1974 Murder on the Orient Express and release it with the fascinating array of supplements that are possible (given the cast members that still survive) and that the film so richly deserves.

A pox on Fox!

The brand new music video from The Man Who Fell to Earth...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszLwBaC4Sw

"Blackstar" is the title track from David Bowie's upcoming album, which will be released on his 69th birthday, January 8.

This music video was directed by sometime Breaking Bad director, Johan Renck, and the song will also serve as the music for Renck's TV show, The Last Panther.

I'm really loving both the song and the music video. The video is creepy, but I would expect no less from Bowie, since he's the ultimate space oddity. In fact, this video looks to continue the Major Tom theme from "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes."
David Bowie is the coolest alien on Planet Earth.

I'm bumping your query as I'm interested. I've been hesitant to purchase and now more curious than ever.
