I didn't like it personally.

But that doesn't mean you won't.

...many consider it a classic.

I may not be the most unbiased person to comment here, since I'm a huge Deneuve fan. And I won't pretend that it's Buñuel's best film. But I find it to be an absolutely compelling investigation of surrealistic eroticism and imagination.

Criterion did a really nice job IMO. Also, it has one of my favorite commentaries of any disc I own, if you're into that. It's a great package.

It was the first foreign film I saw and I loved it.

So yeah, I don't know what's going on here, but once again for like the 3rd time, can anyone provide any solid information on if Criterion is actually releasing "Shampoo"?

You know, just be nice to have that reliable source of information instead of blindly accepting rumor as official news.

If I recall correctly, Criterion released it on Laserdisc, but I haven't heard anything about a Blu-ray release.

I liked Sucker Punch too but Fat Girl took a film that I was enjoying and just trashed all that with a ending that would have been more fitting in a
[Show spoiler]slasher
film than the one I had been watching.

It was mentioned as coming by a Criterion staffer on a podcast. It is absolutely confirmed. Don't blindly turn official news into rumor.

I wish they got their hands on The Last Detail instead. It's a much better film.

I'm not sure what happened for this to be OOP, but this needs to be on blu. Such a fantastic film that looks at voyerism on so many levels.
That doc about Leo Marks is one of my favorite supplements ever. Highly recommend his book, Between Silk and Cyanide, too.

Peeping Tom is one that film theorists love (hence the Laura Mulvey commentary) but on premise alone, it's mind blowing that film was made in 1960. It's no surprise it ruined his career.

There is a region B release of it if you go that way. I don't have it so can't speak to its quality.

The optimum/studio canal region B release is crap. Colours are better but it's slathered in DNR. Some say it's just the thick appearance due to soft focus photography enhanced by the high definition presentation, I say poppycock.

I watched it on DVD courtesy of optimum themselves only months before getting the blu-ray and detail was better on the DVD. The image was more stable and free of artifacts on the blu-ray due to the higher resolution and yes, colours are far lusher but it was a total missed opportunity. The DNR is applied quite heavily so unfortunately I can't personally recommendation it if you already have it on DVD. I'd wait and see if a new transfer is done at some point and just enjoy what you've got until then.

Yeah but I'd prefer Criterion to release it. It would have more features most likely.

Some parts of that blu-ray look very good in my opinion, the main problem for me was the quality was very inconsistent, like if they had a lot of sources with very different qualities, on the other hand I am not denying it could look better with a proper digital transfer.

Who has the US rights for that? I doubt it will ever be released in the US unless Criterion get back the rights unfortunately.

I bought Sucker Punch as it was £1 on bluray and I had been putting it off as it looked aweful - but it really surprised me and I really actually enjoyed it!

I do love Zack Snyders work, my favorite has to be Watchnen

They just announced Death by Hanging.
This would be great - I know a lot of people don't like him film or struggle with them - but there is no doubting he is a very skilful film maker.

Didn't Criterion turn down Enter the Void though? Which would have been awesome in the collection. I'd be happy with any Noe though!

It's always nice to find a fellow Snyder fan and, even more so, someone who appreciates Sucker Punch. It's one of those films that elicits strong emotions in one direction or the other in my experience.

There is a Hong Kong release that's region A and inexpensive. Same transfer as the UK though, which is nothing to be praised, so hopefully Criterion do upgrade it with a new scan.

After the comparisons of the Fat Girl ending to Wages of Fear I decided to watch it last night. I'm surprised this had a 6.5 rating on IMDb. I actually thought the movie was very good although can't say I'm a fan of the subject matter or that I will watch again.

I thought the ending was very fitting for the shock value and a juxtaposition of the previous scenes with the sister's relationship. In one sense they were similar yet to the viewer they were intended to seem so different.

I also watched Good Morning last night. Huge departure IMO from Ozu's longer, deeper films. It was a short, lighter film still dealing with his generational relationships. I liked it and would put it up with Blazing Saddles for cinematic fart scenes.

That staffer was Jonathan Turell, CEO of Criterion, although I wouldn't say he actually confirmed it. He just said it was one he wants to put out.
