I think you are missing big time not seeing The Social Network, but maybe not so much if you didn't liked Gone Girl

It's just that I have absolutely no interest in seeing a movie about Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook.

I didn't dislike Gone Girl, I just didn't like it much, either.

I could care less about Facebook or Zuckerberg, but The Social Network is fantastic. I also didn't care for Gone Girl.

Yeah, I didn't watch it for Zuckerberg, watched for Fincher, same with Steve Jobs, although I haven't seen that yet, it's Danny Boyle

I don't care for Steve Jobs, Apple, or Danny Boyle, but I will definitely see it for Fassbender.

Hmm, I found The Social Network to be incredibly boring, but I really enjoy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl.

Well as they say on The Rules of the Game:

Everyone has their reasons

Fassbender is certainly a plus for me too, but not enough to watch Centurion

I love when someone quotes The Rules of the Game.

Also, guess what? I love all the phantom pages and buying them all!

Generally speaking, the only reason any Criterion title goes OOP is because Criterion lost the rights to it. And while it's possible that they might re-acquire the rights (it's happened, but not often), chances are they won't. So I wouldn't count on any of their OOP titles coming back. It's actually happened more often with titles they originally had on laserdisc, but never put out on DVD than with DVD-only titles that went OOP.

I was looking for a speculation more like in your second paragraph. They still have more than 120 titles on Laserdisc which didn't make it to DVD. I have some of them. DVD OOP titles are about 60 and majority of them are Studio Canal. StudioCanal collection releases seems have slowed down a lot, maybe they don't want to be their own criterion anymore and let CC release their titles like used to. I remember reading CC was very close to releasing Ran on BD, they even had the master ready but StudioCanal decided to release it on its own in StudioCanal collection. CC later released Kagemusha instead.

No surprise it is coming, but I wouldn't expect until 2017.
Inside Llewyn Davis wasn't actually that long either. The first disc came out March 2014, so its just under two years old when the Criterion hits.

It's weird that Criterion being so secretive, is having all these early phantom pages like last month, maybe no one there reads this thread? or maybe they are just doing it for films that will not be announced tomorrow to confuse us?

Either way we will know tomorrow, 4 titles so far, the other has to be an upgrade.

Hah. I saw Centurion on Netflix, not just for Fassbender, but several other people I like in the cast. I liked it well enough, but don't have a strong desire to revisit it.

The problem there is that because LDs were a niche format, the studios weren't as invested in it, and were happy to license titles out to Criterion. When DVD came out of the gate running, the studios felt that it was in their better interests to release their catalogs themselves instead. So Criterion didn't retain the rights for a lot of those titles for DVD. Plus, at the time, all of the MGM and pre-1949 Warner films were owned by Ted Turner and controlled (on home video) by MGM/UA, who were happy to license to Criterion. Once Turner sold his library to Time Warner, Criterion lost the rights, and aren't likely to get them back.

The problem here is that StudioCanal decided that they wanted to license the US rights to their entire catalog at once to a single company. Criterion didn't want to do that, preferring to license specific titles individually. StudioCanal ended up making a deal with Lionsgate. Lionsgate dropped out a number of titles early on, but obviously they didn't sell enough copies to keep at it.

Word is that Lionsgate is more interested in digital platform distribution of the StudioCanal titles than physical media, so it's unclear what that would mean in terms of Criterion being able to reacquire the rights to specific titles. Again, I wouldn't count on that happening.

They are releasing Boyhood before, well...Before trilogy?

That probably means that The Before Trilogy will be released in Q4; hopefully not in '17.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but I think Boyhood is the most overrated movie of the last ten years.

Maybe even the last 20 years.

Admirable concept...mediocre result.
