The road show will be shown in theaters with 70 MM film formats if I remember correctly. The road show version is also longer by 6 mins so there's 2 cuts of the film. It also has an overture & intermission.

Well, the 15th, today, Tuesday, is very close to the weekend, so that's probably why they needed an extra day.
Remember what they teach you in college kids: "Deadlines, Shmeadlines, they're not important"

Tune in tomorrow. As for a blu-ray upgrade, I'd love to see a box set of Lean On Dickens...Great Expectations and Oliver Twist are long overdue for an upgrade.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't bother with it if they release The Colossus of Rhodes.

Nice! Booked my ticket today for December 28. First film shot in Ultra Panavision since Khartoum in '66. Both excited for the film itself, and to see a film in this format on the big screen.

[Show spoiler]To qualify for Oscar consideration during a given year, a film has to be shown theatrically in Los Angeles on or before December 31.

That rule has created some strange awards anomalies over the years. For example, Casablanca was shown theatrically in New York City and in other cities before the end of 1942. Accordingly, it won a lot of 1942 film prizes from other groups. But it didn't screen in Los Angeles until January of 1943, so it was ineligible for the 1942 Academy Awards, and Mrs. Miniver went on to win the Best Picture Oscar for 1942. A year later, Casablanca was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar of 1943, and won.

An even more extreme example involved Charlie Chaplin's film, Limelight. It was released in New York in 1952, and won several awards that year from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. However, it didn't play at any theatres in Los Angeles until 20 years later, in 1972. Having finally qualified for Oscar consideration, it received a nomination for the Best Original Score of 1973 ... and won!

One final anecdote, this time revolving around cuts and prints rather than release dates. The roadshow version of A Star Is Born debuted in 1954 to almost universal critical acclaim. But a week after the premiere, Warner Brothers famously recut the film. A debate still rages about how and why Judy Garland failed to win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the film, with many of her supporters maintaining that if Oscar voters had all seen the original cut, she would never have lost to Grace Kelly in The Country Girl. The point here being that regardless of which version of a film gets nominated, in the end the most important factor is which version of a film the Academy members actually see.
Thanks for the info, jm! I knew Limelight being snubbed had something to do with his supposed Communist leanings, but I didn't know it was because LA theaters refused to show it.

Interesting development fellas:

I just called my local Barnes and Noble to order a copy of The Big City and she said their database listed only one copy available at any of the warehouses around the country that they order from.

I asked her if that meant it might be going out of print and she said it was possible, or it could be that they're changing the cover art.

I can't be sure if she really knows what she's talking about, but it did seem like food for thought.

...get it while the gittin's good boys!

I'm also thinking about ordering a copy of The Music Room, either in addition to or in place of The Big City.

Maybe I'll get both, but The Music Room has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert did include it in his "Great Movies" pantheon.
