Villeneuve is too middle of the road to achieve real greatness in my view, and he is pushing 50 as well. It's not like he is a new up and coming director.

Ridley Scott is still working, so he would be a candidate. I haven't liked or seen much of his later work, but The Duellists, Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma and Louise are all pretty good and generally highly rated.

I want to mention Werner Herzog as well, but I suspect he may be too divisive. I really like the little I've seen of his (mostly Fitzcarraldo, but also Aguirre, Wrath of God and Strozsek, plus his documentaries).

I maintain that there is more to be gained from simply watching them on your own and discussing them later.

I thought that too, but I'm sure that film is not quite as admired in the same way as those other 4 are?

Either way, I love his 'road trilogy'.

Fincher! I knew I'd forgotten someone!

It is, for Robby Müller's involvement beyond the cast and film. Watch it if you haven't, it's great.

I strongly considered Herzog, but I like you haven't seen enough of his work to really judge. What I have seen is tremendous, and he is another person who I really like what they say ABOUT making film. I need to watch more for sure.

Ridley Scott is another one who I don't have much love for. Especially recently.

I was aware of his age. I was also aware of his back catalogue, but I feel it is fairly recent that he's come into the clout/ means necessary to draw the talent/ budget he's desired to work with.

It is an excellent film, though I don't really like Dennis Hopper as Ripley that much. Which is not to say I didn't enjoy him in the film, I just didn't feel he pulled off Ripley. Patricia Highsmith came around on him though, so maybe next time I watch it?

I admit I have only seen the first two unfortunately.
When you have the CC putting out the films, what else do you need? Watch them? What in the world is the sense in making someone a top 5 of films you haven't seen? I could make a list of my top 5 Wenders but they're honestly all worth watching, from entertaining to genius. My top 5 is watch them and make your own top 5!

Thanks for the list BTW. I've seen two of them.

My wife has seen Wings of Desire and really enjoyed it, so that might be the next one up.

I don't have infinite time. Every film I watch is a choice to not watch every other film ever made in that moment.

So a list of potential priorities is helpful and appreciated.

If you don't like sharing opinions on movies, I don't know what you are doing here, but feel free to not participate. I thought you might like to offer your opinion, I thought wrong.

Watch the films CC has license and availability to, and don't limit yourself to blu Rays.

I've seen it. Muller's work is indeed amazing. I really like the film, just not as much as the other 4 I mentioned.

Paris Texas, Alice In The Cities and Kings Of The Road are my personal favourites of W.W.

No. I am recommending you yourself watch the Wenders films in the CC besides the blu rays, since you haven't. If you really want to be adventurous you could go outside of the CC.

By the way, what the hell are you doing on here arguing with me about this crap? Go watch his movies.

Criterion only have 4 of his films, and all are on blu ray, right?
