The definitive release of Charlie Chaplin's The Kid has arrived.

An outstanding 4K restoration that is guaranteed to have a reserved spot on all prestigious Top 10 lists at the end of 2016. The bonus features are also very impressive. Fans of silent cinema should be quite pleased with Ben Model's technical analysis. Fantastic.

Buy this release, folks

Indeed it looks impressive , last time I saw it at theater I thought it was all that could be done with it and it looked the worst of the bunch of his movies.

But this make's the UK releases look like SD upscales at least on terms of sharpness.

if the conversation stemmed from a review of a new Scorsese or new Woody Allen film, would you say the same thing? because their films haven't changed much in 4 decades or so. Its just that their films aren't as good as they used to be. that's all that mja and others are saying.
No need to apologize. I'd say the same thing because Woody is my favorite director.

You might check eBay. There's a copy available there for $28.99 with free shipping, if the digipak is that important to you.

I took a look at the Academy Award nominations just now, and, out of the choices, I'm pushing for Mad Max: Fury Road all the way.

Actually, the only three Best Picture nominees that I've seen so far are Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, and The Revenant. They're all good, but Fury Road is the best.

I probably should see The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Room, and Spotlight, but I just...I just don't feel like seeing any of those.

"The Big Short" being nominated for Best Picture and McKay being nominated for best director is an absolute joke. Terrible film and terrible directorial choices.

Is there a possibility of Goerge Miller getting director win? While I haven't seen The Revenant, it appears it is the favorite for Director and Picture again, but I am not sure if the same director has won this two prices two years in a row.

On the other Hand, Mad Max for Picture is almost guaranteed to not win, since no actors are nominated.

Agree about the sentiment about no Ridley Scott nomination

Edit: Just found out it has happened only two times:

John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath, 1940 and How Green Was My Valley, 1941)
Joseph L. Mankiewicz (A Letter to Three Wives, 1949 and All About Eve, 1950)

Not consecutive Best Picture though.

I've seen all of them except "Brooklyn", "The Martian" and "Room". I thought "Mad Max", "The Revenant", and "Spotlight" were all excellent. I thought "Bridge of Spies" was kind of schmaltzy Spielberg/Hanks fare, but I enjoyed it. I thought "The Big Short" was absolutely godawful.

Carol not nominated for Best Picture or Todd Haynes for directing? Maybe the biggest snub of the century so far.

He's really slipped as a director - not seen a good film from him in years. Can't believe this is the guy who made Alien.

I was chastised elsewhere for saying it was good for Sorkin to not get nominated for Steve Jobs. Tell me I'm not crazy, and that script was not that good.

Wouldn't surprise me if "Spotlight" wins and McCarthy wins best director. Although I thought "Spotlight was very good, it's exactly the kind of movie that gets the Academy all hot and bothered.

so unbridled loyalty all the way, yeah? well, at least you admit to it.

I'm still buying Noel Gallagher's solo albums, but I'd be the first to tell you that a lot of it sucks.

I'm not criticizing you or your post at all. I just want to make that clear.

But I never understand when people say stuff like, "Well x hasn't happened before (or in a long time), so I can't see it happening here." I mean when Miguel Cabrera won his third straight batting title in the AL, he was the first right hander to do it since the 1920 (Rogers Hornsby). Jennifer Lawrence is the youngest person to ever be nominated for 4 Oscars. New stuff is always happening.

And the Academy is over 6,000 people. It's not like they get together and decide not to vote for x because he won last year, or whatever.

ETA: I've only seen Mad Max: Fury Road of the Best Picture nominees, which is ironic since I thought it was fairly awful. I gave it a C+ grade, but that was really only based on Charlize's and Hardy's performances. I thought that the film itself was slightly boring and almost totally empty and devoid of anything resembling character or theme or ideas. The best 2015 films I have seen so far -- Phoenix, Macbeth, Queen of Earth, Diary of a Teenage Girl -- never stood even the slimmest chance of being nominated for anything. But that's the way it is.

Yes, let's just say the probability is lower, the Oscars have been around for 80 years, so there is a certain predictability on the decisions the members of the academy make, I think this can't be compared to sports, because there isn't a bunch of people deciding, even if it is not collective here, I can see how for some people the past winners could influence their decisions, doesn't make sense, but after reading how some of those people decide for which movies to vote you will see it doesn't need to make sense.

BTW I have only seen two of the Best picture nominees, but pretty much agree with you on Mad Max, although I probably would rate it a bit higher if only for the audiovisual spectacle.

Assistants talking among themselves. "Uh should we tell him it's Room not The Room?" "Nah..."

I loved Mad Max: Fury Road when I saw it at the theater, but I love it even more after subsequent viewings on Blu-ray.

Mad Max: Fury Road is not the most profound movie ever made, and it's not the most original movie ever made, but it works. It really really works.

This film, just like The Road Warrior, is a retelling of John Ford's Stagecoach. I think that John Ford would have loved both of these films, though, and he would have loved the updated dynamics and the broken-down-future aspects of the stories.

I think that, more than anything, Mad Max: Fury Road was a reminder of how few films actually work these days, as far as pacing and narrative fervor are concerned. It's a real throwback to the good old days when people simply flocked to the theaters to be told a fun story.

Surprised Wiseau didn't pick up a Best Supporting Actor nod for "Samurai Cop 2" to be honest.

Honestly, during the nearly interminable chase sequences, where stuff was blowing up every 3 seconds, I found myself looking at my watch a lot.

I said this in another thread, but I guess I'm just not the demographic for that kind of movie any more.
