Having loved Solaris, I once decided to watch everything else and had a hard time with most of them, I liked Andrei Rublev and Ivan's Childhood, The Mirror and The Sacrifice had their moments, but I can't put them on the same level, at least after one viewing, I postponed watching Nostalghia because I didn't feel I was prepared for those films.

I would still like to watch them all again at some point, I guess the sad part for me it's that my favorite by far was probably the most different to all his other work, I mean there is also Stalker which is Sci-Fi again, but it is much different, at least that was my impression since it was the first I saw.

Tbh I think his film are made for the big screen - and that is the only way to prepare and get in the mood!

I always struggled and put off Onibaba at home but when it was shown at my local cinema it was phenomenal and one of the best thing I had seen on the big screen!

When you are at home you get too comfortable which I find distracting tbh!

It's the strangest thing, because I'll be fully alert and interested while watching a movie, and then suddenly become drowsy. I'll pause the disc so that I can close my eyes and doze "only for a minute", and then wake up about a half hour later to find out that the Blu-ray player and the television have both shut themselves off altogether.

This is why my plan of watching the Zatoichi movies on weeknights has been such a misadventure so far. The movies are great, but the timing of my watching them is not.
For those long days where it's too late to watch an entire movie before going to bed, I recently started watching "new-to-me" TV episodes on blu-ray instead. They're usually much shorter, and I'm still making progress on getting through my blu-ray collection too.

Yeah that is also what I try to do, going slowly through all the Seinfeld episodes or 20 minutes at a time of my watched criterion blus supplements, I feel like this is the only way I can get through the supplements since some of the movies have more supplements than the length of the films.

Perhaps this is because the characterization is so much better in that movie, and, as such, I'm more receptive to the comedic cues.
Laugh it up, Fuzzball.

I know its for a theatrical release, but do you think as its a new restoration Criterion will grab it for bluray?
I guess one factor would depend on how much of an improvement this restoration makes over the one that the current disc uses. Regardless, I'd love to see this in the theater but sadly there's about a 0% probability of it showing where I live. This was one of the first films from the Janus Collection that I ever saw (back in the '70s) and was instrumental in making me want to explore further. Wonderful film.

You don't bring a blu-ray player with you on vacation?

I'm a huge fan of Tarkovsky, but I wouldn't watch him unless I was in a mood to be analytical, plus highly caffeinated. There are a lot of good films like that. They are just more of a challenge. I could see people falling asleep and would have no problem with that.

That said, I found Solaris to flow the best for me. I was locked in the whole time.

Unrelated, but I have finally decided to crack open the BBS set. Head tonight.

I watched Stalker for the first time ever about a month ago. I did find the dialogue to be quite intriguing, but most of that movie is just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow for me. I watched most of it on 2x speed.

I knew someone would go there.

And since it came up a few posts ago, I bring a portable Blu-Ray player and a few discs on every vacation.

I am a fan of Tarkovsky's work and have seen about half of his catalogue.

I think his best film is undoubtedly Solaris, as it explores the mystery of space, relationships, and our own human nature.

I like The Sacrifice and Nostalghia, but I don't think I'd ever want to see them again. In terms of Ivan's Childhood, I wasn't a big fan of the film despite appreciating its message.

I really, really, really want to see The Mirror. I can almost guarantee that it will have a large influence on me.

I don't usually tweet, post, or whatever while watching films. But I'm watching Head and all I have to say is "wtf?" Has anyone else seen it?

Yeah, "Head" is just stream of consciousness without much of a plot, but I found it enjoyable enough. I think Nicholson was doing a ton of LSD in the late 60s as he did "The Trip", "Psych-Out" and "Head" right in a row. He wrote "The Trip" and "Head" and starred in "Psych Out". I enjoy those late 60s, "Whoa, man", psychedelic movies as time capsules, but one's tolerance of "Head" depends on his or her enjoyment of time capsules from that era.

Just saw that StudioCanal is releasing Leaving Las Vegas in the UK this year. Here's hoping it's a remaster. Maybe the rumored Criterion release is nearing.

That was my reaction at the time, but in the end I did enjoy all the craziness and the music, even if not much makes sense.

I honestly don't care for any of those films in that set.

Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show are solid, but no thank you.
