My advice would be to watch Top Gun five times in a row, then download the movie soundtrack and listen to it on repeat while falling asleep tonight. With any luck the raw testosterone will seep into your subconscious and counteract your dangerously high estrogen levels. You can still be a man. ...you'll just never be an Murican. ![]() ![]() |

Put up your dukes. It's up there, but not quite at the top. Not even if you only count American TV. But keep in mind that "the history of television" also includes Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander, Kieslowski's Dekalog, Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz, Trier's The Kingdom, and Peterson's mini-series version of Das Boot. |

I really like it a lot and have been meaning to watch it again. I was fan of Jem Cohen's already from work I knew of his in the music industry and was presently surprised at how much I enjoyed his film. I believe three blu-ray has some of his short films on it as well.

And yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. Twin Peaks, of course. But Lost is right up there. I remember thinking to myself, "There's no way I'll make it a week to see the next episode. No. Way." "Twin Peaks" and "Lost" are such different experiences that it's somewhat difficult to even compare them. |

Can we put all the Top Gun joking to rest? It was funny for a while, but now ... less so. I will withdraw this request if there is ever a Criterion release, or even a credible rumor. Thank you.

During the early-to-late 1990s, I was a massive fan of The X-Files. I never missed the episodes, because I would videotape them in the event that I went out with friends on Friday nights, I loved theorizing about the mythology episodes, and I even collected the VHS tape releases. Around the time that the seventh season kicked in, though, I became hugely burned out with the show, and my enthusiasm waned. I did catch the series finale at the end of Season 9, but I was extremely disappointed. One of the reasons why I do not bother watching any newer television shows is because of my dismay at how The X-Files played out toward the end, because I do not want to invest that sort of time and attention to another show that might fizzle out. I had a blast revisiting the show at long last this weekend, though, and those Season 1 episodes brought back a flood of memories. My plan is to watch all nine of the seasons this year, and, by that time, the brand new episodes will be out on Blu-ray for me to devour all at once. I'm balancing out my revival of The X-Files, however, with movies. This weekend, I also made time to watch The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (fun and underrated movie), The Wild Eye (insightful and bleak movie), and Figures in a Landscape (great great great movie that would have been a cool Criterion title). I'll be revisiting Gilda in between the episodes of The X-Files in the coming days. |

The better the show the more (some) people are disappointed in the series finale. There's tons of whining over the final episodes of The Sopranos, Seinfeld and Breaking Bad - all of which represent the pinnacle of the television format.
Sometimes i think people would be more pleased if a show was canceled prematurely. It almost makes fans romanticize the show even more. |

I Knew Her Well Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() There are so many things that I want to say about this magnificent film ![]() First, I must say finally, because a film from Antonio Pietrangeli is finally in the Criterion Collection. It was such a shame that he -- and until recently the late Ettore Scola -- was ignored. Hopefully, very soon we will also see a film from Mauro Bolognini in the collection. The film is an absolute masterpiece -- phenomenal atmosphere; great, great performance from Stefania Sandrelli, arguably her best; tremendous supporting cast, a giant list of European stars, really; a master cinematographer working with Pietrangeli; and a soundtrack from one of the biggest Italian composers from the era, plus a long list of hits. The restoration: It is a stunner. I don't know how many people have seen the old Italian DVD, which was also from a remaster/restoration, but this release is on an entirely different level. And what a treat to finally hear the music pitched properly. Please add this film to your collections. I guarantee you will see it many, many times in the years to come. ![]() ![]() Pro-B |

I still think that St. Elsewhere set the bar pretty high as far as series finales go. I also got a real kick out the Cheers series finale. Of course, I also love the final dialogue scene between Crockett and Tubbs in the series finale for Miami Vice. Tubbs tells Crockett that he is going to return to New York City, and then he asks where Crockett is going to go. Crockett replies, "Somewhere further south. Somewhere where the water's warm and the drinks are cold and I don't know the names of the players." |

![]() Yeah, I think Pro-B has some streak running through him that is pure evil. I mean, I was already thinking about getting this -- I was right on the line -- and then he comes out with a review like this. I can't possibly fight against that sort of thing. I just can't. *gives up* |

I'm curious what people who felt burned by Lost think of The Leftovers. I have up on Lost after season 3, it felt really aimless and oozed contempt for its audience. And while The Leftovers has Lindelof as th show runner, it really feels like an anti-lost.
I myself am also working through the X-Files, but it's so much TV to catch up on. |
