It is for releases like these that I am so elated and reassured with my decision to go "region-free!"
Yes, the UK labels have been on a role in terms of silent films, that one, the Keaton shorts set that supposedly use the Lobster new restorations, The Man With a Movie Camera, The Last Command and BFI has some others too.

Granted some of them have their counterparts from Kino or Flicker Alley but for some reason it is cheaper to get them directly from UK than in US, even with the shipping.

I decided I will get Umberto D and Bicycle Thieves in the next sale, a pity they removed some of the essays on the booklet and it is not a digipak probably because of that.

I was wondering if anyone has seen De Sica's Miracle in Milan?

I once blind bought that from Amazon UK for super cheap and they cancelled because of stock issues, even though it doesn't appear to be OOP, but I am not sure how it compares with his other more well known works.

They're also releasing the Complete Buster Keaton Short Films 1917-1923, Josef von Sternberg's The Last Command and in two weeks they're releasing Man with a Movie Camera and Other Works by Dziga Vertov in a Limited Edition (regular edition to follow).

Have you seen Umberto D? Mildly surprised you don't have it as I know you've got quite a number of CC BD. Very nice film. It isn't Bicycle Thieves, but it's really good.

I haven't watched them yet, but I found a Korean DVD of Miracle in Milan and the Image Entertainment DVD release of Shoeshine for $.99 apiece at a local used store a few weeks back. I'll try to watch them this week and let you know how they compare to his more well-known works.

I've seen Miracle in Milan but it's been many years ago. I do remember enjoying it and I liked the fantasy sequences. I'm surprised that Shoeshine isn't a Criterion title.

Yes I have seen both, I remember liking Umberto D more, but it's been quite a while since I saw the other, I have a feeling I might enjoy Bicycle Thieves more this time.

Great movie, it is one that doesn't win me over by any scene in particular, but has a strange and very particular atmosphere that makes it worthwhile in the end, still hoping for the upgrade this year even if they haven't done many so far.

Shoeshine, Umberto D., Bicycle Thieves. At least one of these three will crush your soul. In my case it was Bicycle Thieves.

I'd add his later The Garden of the Finzi-Continis to that list. Absolutely devastating final sequence.

9.99 GBP on Amazon.co. (it'll be 11.41 GBP shipped to the US. That's roughly $16.50).

Whatever you do, don't do what I did... spend $125 on The Third Man (OOP Criterion) a couple of years ago.

Money not well spent (as I rarely go back to re-watch that movie).

I recently got my copy of the above mentioned UK release. I was testing to see if the supplemental material would work on an all region player, so I watched the female zither musician (don't have her name right now) play The ThirdMan theme. It was at that point that I #1 cried at the awesomeness of that tune and #2 realized that I now love The Third Man more than my newly-ousted former fav film of all time, Vertigo.
