A similar topic was discussed some time ago in the UK forums and Michael B listed out why it can run into the tens of thousands of pounds to add only one set of subtitles. For boutique labels with small markets it is simply not cost justifiable.

I don't doubt that this is true for new content and extras, but most of Criterion's movies must have available subs in other languages (they're either classics or already out on blu). It's most likely just a matter of licensing.

And it is a little curious, since only three sets of subs would over the entire North American continent. To cover Europe would require a lot more subtitle languages.

thousands of pounds when there is already a set of subtitles avaiable in previous DVD editions?
Or when they do have to create them from scratch?
Because i wouldn't believe it applies for the former.

Thats what I was thinking also. The subtitles are already done they dont need to rehire someone to translate it. Unless of course it costs them much more to import the already exisiting subtitle tracks. I dunno, but I always found it strange that they would opt for just everything English while every other studio shows multi-language diversity.

You'd need to license any earlier subtitling.

What I thought was interesting was that The American Friend from earlier this year had an SDH track as well as the regular "subtitles for the foreign language segments." In the past Criterion's just left it be, and stuff like Summer Hours or even Grand Illusion which features substantial scenes in English no subtitling offered at all.

I don't believe the cost is necessarily in creating them, but licencing them, or having the ability to include them added to the licensing agreement.

Yeah I was reading about it, and apparently any kind of translation is considered a derivative work which seems crazy to me since the subtitles is not the main part of a movie, and even so if you get rights to the whole movie I don't see reason to threat them as a separate thing to add more costs, but apparently it is a big deal for studios and such, so while it might be easy to translate a movie (I'll do it for much less than 10,000 pounds ) there might be other problems.

IIRC, it wasn't just the initial translation or licensing, a lot of the cost comes from putting them in and the review process.

I think it might be more that if the owner of the film wants to attempt to license the same film in a predominantly Spanish speaking area for example, they're position is stronger if there is not already a release on the market with Spanish subtitles, especially in the same region.

Makes sense, for big studio releases their objective is to reach to the biggest audience possible, some studios even release a lot of region free titles and most of them have multi subs and audio.

But when they sell the rights to smaller labels their objective must be to get all the money possible out of their deals.

Am I mistaken, or can we expect a B&N Criterion sale again this month?
I just want to be prepared. Thanks in advance.

You're mistaken. B&N's 50% Off Criterion sales are in July and November.

There may well be a generic 40% Off All Blu-rays or Buy 2 Get 1 Free sales (both of which would include Criterions) coming up, though.

The transfer for In the Mood for Love is an injustice. It is time for a new 4K scan.

Where is Criterion on 4K/HDR/WCG? Boutique packaged media distributors aught to be bringing us the best of the best. Otherwise, what's the point? Might as well stick it up on Hulu or whatever and call it a day.

But we could look forward to the day Mulvaney decided to write his book on editing the forum, Mulvaney's Mallet. I'm sure it would be filled with all Ray's blocked posts and emails. Reveling us with anecdotes of how he spent the evenings celebrating their deletion. Tales of wine, women, and debauchery.

If you're that unhappy with the current release, I'm guessing you'd still find something to complain about with whatever improved release they'd come up with.

Speaking of Ray, where's he been? I can tell he hasn't been around since the thread hasn't looked like a 14 year old's Tumblr recently.
