It's probably something really obvious, but I give up.

I have no idea what a turtle on a grill could possibly refer to.

I wonder if the clue has to do with His Girl Friday since a character hides in a desk like that, but I don't remember if there are any lines that relate to a turtle or if that character or others are compared to a turtle.

So true. A prank only fails miserably if nobody fell for it. In this case, Dr. Jack's reaction alone makes it worth it.

I don't know how you did that, but I am super excited about this release. As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my all time favorite movies. I think next month I am just going to ask you to post some fake clues for other movies I want.

When I saw the desk, I acrually laughed because of the HGF connection. Wonder if that really is the release! That'd be amazing!

I think it's for Dragon Inn. I believe that's supposed to be a Komodo Dragon. And if I'm not mistake it's in a "Commode" furniture.

I had second thoughts about it. The tail is a little too small to be a Komodo I think. It really does look like a turtle. And the whole mock turtle and
[Show spoiler]hiding in a desk
thing fits well with His Girl Friday.

I finished watching Black Narcissus yesterday morning, and if this is indicative of the quality of other Powell & Pressburger films, then I'm all in. I have The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp already, so it looks like I'll be stretching my Barnes & Noble budget a little more to pick up Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes both come next week. That should satiate my Archers need for a while, and then I'll explore from there.

Where to begin? First off, Jack Cardiff's cinematography is absolutely spectacular. When you consider that the film was not shot amongst the Himalayas of India, but at Pinewood Studios just outside of London, his visual accomplishment is simply unfathomable. That is how Technicolor was meant to look! But, the beauty of that cinematography belies the undercurrent of anguish, lust, and self-loathing that subtly permeates the characters of the film. Then, there are some really fine performances-as always, Deborah Kerr is exceptional as the Sister Superior, Sister Clodagh. And Kathleen Byron is the very embodiment of madness as the unhinged, lovesick Sister Ruth. And then there is the young dancing Jean Simmons, writhing around like ripe fruit begging to be picked from a tree. Some of the secondary characters were a little over the top, especially Angu Ayah, but fortunately she doesn't detract from an otherwise fine movie.

That first step is a doozy...
I wish A Matter of Life and Death aka Stairway to Heaven would be issued on Blu-ray....to me, it is one of my top 10 favorites of all time!

This seals it for me (potential spoilers if you haven't seen the film) for His Girl Friday. The roll-top desk is very similar to the drawing, and of course he is also referred to as a "mock-turtle" by Grant. It's been a while since I'd seen the film, so I didn't remember all the details, as were discussed above by others, but yeah, I'm confident now it's what it's for. Amazing (and creepy) job Akijama.

But seriously, I've got no problems with graphic sex in non-porn, although I don't have anything against "official" porn either. Since I watch most movies alone, there's no awkwardness between me and someone else when watching such scenes. And I've got no problem with artists trying to find ways to incorporate graphic sex into a "real" narrative. Many aren't successful, but I applaud the attempt to try. I still think Radley Metzger came the closest to uniting the two elements. The Image is one of the best movies ever made on its particular subject. Great dialogue and acting, and the graphic sexual stuff has narrative meaning too.
Haha. I can't you're not on the money with that assessment. Sex and thrills go a long way to making my best of lists.

I love Metzger (Camille 2000 is everything and more), but I couldn't get into The Image actually. I guess the images just weren't as potent as The formers for me

Criterion should keep rolling out the Hawks films on blu-ray. Ball of Fire would be great, too.

When I first saw the clue, I thought roll-top desk and got excited, knowing that such a desk figures prominently in His Girl Friday. But then I noticed that it had a hinged lid and I thought bbq grill, and then I was stumped. Light of the Iguana? I think the mock turtle reference makes me think I was right the first time. So psyched if that's the case. This is turning into a very good year.
