Silly question time: Those of you who've purchased boxed sets, do you display them on the shelf with the closed end of the box showing or with the open end of the box showing and the spines exposed? An inquiring mind wants to know.

I don't think it's a silly question. I display them with closed-end showing.

I go spines exposed. Just like seeing the individual titles. I do this particularly because I want to know that "Drive, He Said"/"A Safe Place" double feature is always there for me in tough times.

I must be a weird duck as I've had the itch to revisit them.

It's starting to look like I'm going to have to wait on 3:10 to Yuma, Days of Heaven and and Badlands. Oh well... I picked up 7 criterion's. That might due for now.

I don't mind "Drive, He Said" that much. I've seen it twice and it's not very good, but there are some decent elements to that movie. The performances of the two leads (the basketball player and his roommate) are a real problem. Bruce Dern is excellent though as always and the film has some interesting statements about the 60s social movements. I wish Nicholson could have acted in it in some capacity. I know that the lead actor needed to be decent at basketball, but his performance is pretty awful. I watched the movie "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks and I noticed his brother is played by the lead in "Drive, He Said". Only other time I've seen him.

I've watched "A Safe Place" twice and it didn't improve for me on the second viewing. Not a fan of Henry Jaglom's films at all. "Tracks" with Dennis Hopper is alright, but still manages to incorporate moments of Jaglom cringiness. Jaglom always makes me think, "What if Woody Allen really sucked and had no comedic sense?" Then, he would be Henry Jaglom. I love Woody, but Jaglom is kind of what Woody would be if he didn't have a lot of talent.

Closed end of the box showing. No particular reason other than I prefer the way it looks.

Ah, well technically he does. Take a close look during the draft sequence, you can see him in the back row with a beard and glasses kind of squirming and acting restless in his seat.

I agree with this assessment of Jaglom. I've seen a few of his films and they've all been awful. The only thing I like about A Safe Place is seeing the lovely Gwen Welles in a couple of scenes. I loved her in Nashville as Sueleen Gay and this is the only other thing I've ever seen her in.

If the box has a spine number, I leave the open end out until I'm finished with all the discs, then I turn it around and put the closed end out. If the box doesn't have a spine number (America Lost and Found) I leave the open end out.

Amazon sent me a message about it this morning.

Any reason for the delay? I figure they spotted a screw up that'll take time to fix, but still, I wonder what it is...

With the B&N Criterion sale winding down, can anyone make recommendations? Here's a list of titles I do not already own. I've seen a couple of these, but are there any titles here that anyone is really passionate about or feel is an overlooked gem in cinema history? Thanks!

Wow thats a lot of titles to choose from, if I had to narrow it down to 10 my picks would be:

The Big City: I guess you already seen the Apu Trilogy? this is a no brainer if you enjoyed those, personally my favorite Ray film.
Night and the City: One of my favorites film noir films.
The Organizer: More drama than the typical Italian comedy, but it balances it well, it also has a smaller price tag.
The Thin Blue Line: Easily one of the best documentaries I have seen.
Black Orpheus: One of the greatest soundtracks in the collection.
The Naked Island: While not silent, it plays almost like one, with a great musical score.
Fish Tank: Well it has Michael Fassbender, the girl is amazing too.
Summer Hours: Such a great family drama, with a very relatable story.
The Music Room: just because... More Ray is always welcome.
Lonesome: Again with the silent's you can't miss this if you are fan of something like Sunrise (1927)

3 Women is the best film in that entire list with The Night and the City also being a must have.

Narrowing it down to ten, I would highly recommended:
3 Women
Crumb
Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project
Ministry of Fear
Music Room, The
Naked Kiss, The
Night and the City
Shock Corridor
Thin Blue Line, The
Weekend
