Loose narratives tend to lose me personally--thus, I didn't care as much for Everybody Wants Some!! or Boyhood.

I do give Dazed and Confused a slight pass though. I almost got rid of my copy thinking it wouldn't hold up, but when I rewatched the first hour or so, I realized I was genuinely amused.

Of the Linklater films I've seen, A Scanner Darkly appeals to me the most. It is very close to the original novel, and it sure is trippy.

Dazed and Confused came out the summer after my senior year in high school.

To this day, I don't know if I've ever had as much fun watching a movie in theater.

...it was a magical time.

Jellyfish Eyes is certainly no great movie, but Murakami is quite the artist. I reccomdend checking out his artwork.

It doesn't reverberate quite as much as Dazed and Confused, as I mentioned in my review, but that might mainly be due to the fact that the loose narrative style seemed more innovative back in 1993.
While similar I don't think they are on the same league, Dazed and Confused is definitely funnier and I liked the music more than the new one.

To be fair, I wasn't a teenager yet on any of those two decades depicted, so I can just assume how accurate they were, I guess I'l be waiting till he makes one about the 90's

The Before trilogy is fantastic. Particularly the first movie, though. It's probably in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. The second one is very good, but too brief. The third one... I hated it the first time I saw it. But I've learned to like it, I guess. It wasn't what I was expecting. But after I saw it once, I was like... yeah, it's good. Continues realistically, as the series should be expected to do. Just kind of... gut-wrenching, I guess. I dunno.

Also... (unrelated to the quoted post)... why does everyone hate Jellyfish Eyes so much? Haha. It's a strange, crazy, weird movie that I have no problem watching. Maybe it isn't "Criterion material" or whatever... but I think it's an entertaining enough movie, anyway.

I'm unfamiliar with that film but I'm keen to check it out now.

To me, Murakami's work Is leaps and bounds ahead of other pop subversives such as Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst. It toys around with consumerism and self parody with actual energy and skill unlike those two lunkheads.

Nah, I like it just fine myself, but those two films seem historically to be the ones in the collection most vigorously panned in this thread.

To make room for the amazing Studiocanal Blu-ray with the 4K restoration.

I think it's certainly worth a look, it was a fascinating story with a fair amount of heart to it. And it has some very trippy, surreal scenes.

Now that I think about it, I suppose it's kinda comparable to Paprika, but with the kind of themes Transcendence had.

That and the fact that I spent $175 on it a few years ago and I can make quite a bit of that money back.

I don't think Ray owns The Third Man. Strike while his wallet is still open from the BN sale.

Agreed. Huge disappointment... made even worse as it was being hyped up as a "spiritual sequel" to Dazed and Confused. Crappy characters and the whole vibe of it wasn't even in the same ballpark as D&C.

Hoke - who is the band in your avatar picture? I'm assuming that's a band.

Re: Linklater. I've seen all of his films and enjoy most of them, but still think "Slacker" is his best. That's such an anarchic, cool movie. Having spent some time in Austin, there's this tug of war between being this super liberal place and then these kind of off the grid, conspiracy-driven types. That movie captures it perfectly. "Slacker" is an amazing film IMO. "Dazed and Confused" and the Before Trilogy are much more generally accessible movies, but "Slacker" is by far his most badass, interesting movie. It's one of the more fascinating films of the last 30 years IMO.
