She said that it reminded her of the seventh seal, Virgin spring and Maria Falconetti.

Scorsese chose to tell the story in a cold, unbiased tone which is part of what made the film great. Unfortunately that will likely turn lots of audience off as well. And the subject matter is a tough sell. Not lots of people want to sit through a long, serious film about religion. They want La La Land and Captain Fantastic.

This sounds perfect to me I can't wait

Today marks my four-year anniversary on Blu-ray.com and on this thread. Woo hoo!

Ahhh...December 19, 2012. So long ago. That was back when we all still thought that America had won the Cold War, back when we all thought that Blu-rays were the final physical media format, and back when I was under the delusion that I was not going to upgrade most of my DVDs.

At any rate, it's great to be here still. If my copy of The Asphalt Jungle arrives in the mail today, then that will make it even cooler.

I need to pay far more attention, when as Being There announced?

4K scan, got to be better than the current release, which has always looked just a tad too 'digital' to me.

Four days ago, on the 15th, as Criterion announcements are supposed to be each month.

Owl, congratulations on your anniversary at Blu-ray.com. Much film cheer and goodness has passed and is still to come.

Not to be the bearer of bad math, but Dec 2012 makes this your fourth anniversary.

I only point this out to save you grief down the road when your future wife brains you with one of your Blu-ray storage tubs for forgetting how many years you've been married.

Yes, it has too much compression and looks flat.

This is what happens when I try to write a post a few minutes before a conference call.

My f̶i̶v̶e̶ four years at Blu-ray.com have not necessarily made me a better thinker.

Actually, that's not far from the truth. When I'm tired, I lose all any ability to do math.

Yesterday I celebrated my five-month anniversary of not being suspended.

It's been a long road and there were times when I doubted my ability to act like a functional member of society...with morals and discretion and other things of this nature that normal human beings take for granted.

But with the help of a higher power and a one-day at a time approach to posting, I've been able to open my heart and my mind to the sunlight of the spirit.

I'd like to offer a special thanks to my support group.

...they were always there for me in the dark times.

Figure this is the thread that will know most about this.

So last night I viewed Double Indemnity for the umpteenth time upon my guest's request. Really one of my most rewatchable films ever.

Anyways, afterwards, the extras popped up, which I was unaware of. Figured I'd check out five minutes or so of the obligatory special that heaps the praise, but then I noticed something that caught my eye: a TV remake. I had no idea this was a thing and instantly put it on. Good lord, if you ever want a counterpart that will highlight the necessity of certain pieces going into filmmaking, this is it - even more-so than Gus Van Sant's Psycho, which I find more revealing and intentional with its intentions than this (from what I gather from a quick Google search, that is.) The color instantly dates the film and it goes off downhill quick as soon as you hear the infamous honeysuckle line, delivered with a loud thud by Richard Crenna. It's on in the background at the moment, something I never do with films I view, but this one offers nothing else other than its superfluous nature and confirms the essential presence of Stanwyck, Robinson, and, of course, MacMurray.

Has anyone else seen this (I'm thinking of you, Great Owl)? I mean, I suppose it's nice that they included this, but still. Anyone know of any other similar examples, preferably in the Collection? I'm curious to view the 12 Angry Men TV film.

It's a good thing no one on this site ever makes fun of typos or bad math. We're just a bunch of fun loving movie collectors.

It's actually really good. Friedkin did a great job with it and the cast is amazing.

The biggest misstep of the Double Indemnity remake is that Samantha Eggar's Phyllis Dietrichson is too conventionally attractive. In the original Double Indemnity, Barbara Stanwyck's Phyllis Dietrichson is skanky-sexy, with her dyed blonde hairstyle that probably looked sort of ridiculous even in 1944. Billy Wilder's choice to give Stanwyck the cheesy blonde wig was spot-on intentional. The original Double Indemnity, as such, is a great ode to every otherwise intelligent man who has let his sex drive do the thinking for him and who has thrown his life away for short-term pleasure with a low-hanging-fruit skanky woman who just happened to push his buttons in the right way. This sort of situation mirrors contemporary real-life stories of wealthy and successful family men who got caught with hookers from Craigslist.com.

I second this. Jack Lemmon subbing for Fonda, and George C. Scott subbing for Cobb both gave terrific performances. It probably helped that Reginald Rose wrote this version as well as the original television play and film versions. Rose was one of the Holy Trinity of 1950s television writers (the other two being Paddy Chayevsky and Rod Serling).

It is a good film but some of the minor swaps weren't great. e.g Danza for Warden etc. The updated racial politics seemed rather forced too.
