I used to be a massive fan of Kerouac and the whole beatnik writing scene back in my college days.

Check out Desolation Angels when you get the chance.

...it's pure, raw, unfiltered Kerouac.

Might be his masterpiece.

The film, Big Sur, is actually pretty good imo.

Mostly bad reviews, but I thought it was far better than the piece of crap they made out of On The Road.

...it's on Netflix.

Hey fellow Criterion Crazies lol Hope you all had a happy holiday!

Mine was great except for Carrie Fisher's passing. This hardcore Star Wars nerd was super sad a few days ago. All the good ones are leaving us it seems. Strong women can't catch a break this year lol

Anyway this is Criterion related because wasnt there rumors that Shampoo is coming? Or am I getting that mixed up with another company. Or for that matter another movie lol

Also why has Postcards From The Edge never been released on blu? Normally I wouldn't assume this to be Criterion material but after Tootsie and Valley of The Dolls it seems anything is possible lol

I watched the Capra doc on the It Happeed One Night bluray last night and boy, It reminded me how much we desperately need Meet John Doe on bluray.

(By the way, the endings to this and many other films are spoiled in the doc so stay away if you haven't seen them yet)

Just watched Grey Gardens for the first time. Watched it on Film Struck. I think it's a good documentary. I love docs but goddamn was this one hard to watch. The two subjects are gross, annoying, and seem idiotic. Like I found it physically hard to watch just cause of how gross they are. Anyone else feel this way during watching it?

No. It's all in the context of the film. I found them both endearing. Two eccentrics refusing to live according to society's norms. It was sad to see their decline and the state of their living conditions though. It was good to know that Little Edie eventually left that house and lived the rest of her life on her own terms.

When does the drawing come out? On New Years Day or just somewhere around there?

This was just on TCM, or another movie channel, and I TiVo'd the film. Haven't joined FilmStruck yet so took advantage of it being on tv. This will be my first viewing, now worried a little bit... I can't handle shows like Hoarders and others where things get really disgusting. But still interested in this one.

On a related topic, has anyone seen the Documentary Now homage to Grey Gardens

What's endearing about them? They live in filth and sing horribly throughout the whole film and don't seem to ever know what they are talking about. Refusing to live life to societies norms? They live like squatters I mean that's not something to find endearing to me. It was a well filmed documentary I just can't believe people actually think what those two people were doing was brave or anything like that. Just pure laziness I mean hell the mother didn't leave her bed half the time and would literally cook while in bed. Just really disgusting to watch.

Well that's my personal experience with the film and you have yours. I also know people in my life who live in similar situations (hoarders) and I care about them deeply. Their situation is not as extreme though, but I wont place judgement. Maybe that's why I look at it through a different lens.

Carrie Fisher's passing was a gut punch, but then losing Debbie Reynolds a day later was just too much. I really feel for Todd Fisher. I thought I was doing badly after losing one of my sisters and then a year later, my mother. But losing them a day apart. Dear God.

#Worst.Year.Ever.

Im really sorry to hear that Jayembee. A year apart is tough. Im 28 and even at this age I dont go a day without at least texting my mom so yeah Im really sorry about that. Ive loved Princess Leia since the first time I saw SW prob when I was around 8. Then as I grew older I loved Carrie the person. Her personality is perfection to me lol So yeah I think Im still a little shocked since it happened so quickly.

Im ashamed to admit I dont know much about Debbie Reynolds except that she was Carries mom and she sings the "Good Morning" song in the OJ commericials and I only found that out yesterday. Im going to have to check out some of her filmography very quickly.

There are a dozen great reasons to see Singing in the Rain, and Debbie Reynolds is one of the best.
