It's always (well, usually) sad to hear of a celebrity passing but some passings have a special significance. Mary Tyler Moore's was one of those for me~ I teared up and I'm not generally a teary kind of guy. And so is Robert Osbourne's. His gentle, welcoming countenance and manner, as he would introduce each film to it's expectant and eager audience, was so warm and reassuring that each of us were drawn into the viewing experience in an entirely happy and personal way. We'll miss him...

I finally put all my digipacks together and the filled an entire shelf perfectly. Of course when I get Blow-Up that goes away! Other than that they're in no particular order. I kind of like contrasting color spines. I only have about three shelves of the scanavo case titles so its not like I have to do a lot of digging to find what I want.

I am absolutely devastated. It's only really been within the past five years or so that I became a real TCM fan. Robert's enthusiasm for film, and his encyclopedic knowledge, made every intro or interview compelling and enjoyable.

The magnitude of his passing really can't be put into words. He's one of the principle reasons I have become such a huge fan of classic film, and the ridiculous amount I've spent in the past two years on my collection is, in large part, due to him.

Thank you for your charm and grace, Robert. TCM won't ever be the same for me now.

I'm talking about seven Samurai. I want to buy it, but I'm afraid as soon as I do they will announce a new 4K scan.

I'm optimistic, but Criterion definitely won't be releasing 4K any time soon (if at all).

Just a FYI, TCM is showing Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles in HD on Monday, March 13th at 1:45 am (CST). Criterion's blu-ray goes on sale May 9th, so anybody wishing to see this extraordinary film for the first time, or to get a look at the new 2k restoration before it goes on sale, here's your chance.

I just switched from FIOS to Direct TV. So happy to have TCM in HD !

Ha ha ha... Ha.

In that case you should buy it right away.

Don't worry they won't re-release it anytime soon.

.. I bought the Le Samourai DVD thinking the same.

Nope, that didn't happen. Looks like it might never happen.

No, no, no. I won't be up at that time, need my beauty sleep.

Instead, on the 9th of May ... I'll wake up early and head straight to the Christmas tree in the living room.

... where I shall find a Amazon package waiting for me.

... THE END.

If you have Sling like I do, you can just wait for any given film to go in their streamable section. They retain something like the last 5 days of films for you to watch anytime.

This is going to sound convoluted but...

I have 4 bookcases that have Criterions in them. One case is just Japanese films, organized by director. The next case is all other Asian cinema, organized by country, then by director. Third bookcase is all my favorite non Asian directors, organized by director. Finally I have a 4th case where the rest of my Criterions are, alphabetical in 2 sections: watched and unwatched, and those sections are further split between plastic cases as digipaks.

The first 3 cases aren't just Criterions. The last one is just Criterion.

I recently went from Helikaon's system to a (small) room dedicated to my CD and DVD/BD collections and filled with Billy bookcases. This is how I did it, after much deliberation:
  1. Criterions - arranged by spine number, regardless of format.
  2. Ditto Eureka
  3. Ghibli in release order
  4. Disney, BFI, general anime, steelbooks, TV shows, classical music, non-classical music - alphabetical, regardless of format
  5. Boxsets - on the top or in front of rows
  6. Everything else: alphabetical

Unfortunately I didn't have enough space so some rows are double stacked, which I hate. But at least I can find stuff now

I organize my Blu-rays by genre, so the horror Criterion titles go with the other movies in the horror section, the film noir Criterion titles go with the film noir section, and so on.

By title, it would be dashed hard to remember them by spine numbers. Also, the boxsets and larger/unusual packaging are separate from the normal cases.

When I was a teen and bought an LP it always went into a random place in my record racks; every now and then I'd sort them into alphabetical order and it always seemed like I lost a little bit of the magic when I did that

Default Welcome To The (Criterion) Club

Criterion Sale picks The Before Trilogy and Don't Look Now join Target Criterion Feb B2G1 selections. Although my Criterion collection is relatively small (30; subscribed to Hulu for past few years), nevertheless they receive a dedicated shelf, first sorted by Blu vs. DVD, then by packaging (Digibook vs. case), finally by alpha. Now that I've canceled Hulu and will most likely not subscribe to Filmstruck, anticipate the shelf to be filled over time.
