Blu-ray Archduke

I've got the Pathe Blu-ray, and it's a head-scratcher. Many scenes look terrible, almost as though being seen in watercolor, but many other scenes look brilliantly detailed. I own the second release of this disc, which is reportedly the "corrected" edition, but it is still problematic. Whenever I revisit the film these days, I go with the Criterion DVD. One thing interesting about the Pathe Blu-ray, though, is that it sports a darker look for the movie that might have reflected original filmmaker intent more accurately. |

Yeah, common sense would say there isn't a reason to issue another dvd version, bit I'm not sure I could figure out the reason they released the additional dvd version they were already discussing.

I'd imagine heads would explode if CC announced Le Samourai was being re-issued with new packaging on DVD with no mention of blu-ray. More of JM's macho head games.

Tarantino's work has always been derivative, but he injects such an enthusiastic fervor into the proceedings that I cannot help but be drawn in. My favorites are Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, Reservoir Dogs, and Death Proof, but they're all watchable and interesting. Inglourious Basterds stars the lovely Léa Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color) in a minor role as one of the three babe daughters of the French dairy farmer at the beginning. |

I do love some Tarantino. Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown are three of his finest films. All Stone Cold Classics!
Not a fan of some of his newest films. Django Unchained was a complete waste, IMHO, and was a huge disappointment for me. This was when I felt he lost his way and fell in love with himself. Hateful Eight just confirmed it with me. When I contrast this with his earliest films, this one comes off poorly in comparison. I found the dialogue overly in love with itself and some of the actions just ridiculous in this film. I won't go into it, but the denouement at the end of the film, for me, was ludicrous. That and the unbelievable ability of Samuel Jackson's mega talkative character to soldier on despite a very horrific injury just took me out of the whole film. When I contrast Hateful Eight with Bone Tomahawk, another recent film that starred the great Kurt Russell, The Hateful Eight comes out pretty badly in comparison. Bone Tomahawk was the best old style Tarantinoless Tarantino like film that I've seen recently. (whew!) That was one lean and mean film compared with the greatly overstuffed H8. If you want to see a great Tarantino film that isn't Tarantino, then you should definitely pick up the excellent Bone Tomahawk. Again, all this is just IMHO. ![]() |

Check out this clip (he even talks about his own movie projecting to gross $100 million dollars....hmmm, even back then, QT was thinking about financial success - as a character in his own film!): |

Pulp Fiction was one of the first R rated movies I ever saw in a movie theater (I was 16 years old or something I think). It still holds up after all this time, but I secretly enjoy Jackie Brown more nowadays.

I just saw this posted in one of the FB Criterion film groups, and thought it might be of some use to the thread (my apologies if it has been posted before).
Mosfilm has put a bunch of their films on YouTube to watch for free: http://www.openculture.com/2017/03/w...sawa-more.html https://www.youtube.com/user/mosfilm |

On a different topic I received my copy of Bigger than Life yesterday and watched it. I thought it was pretty good. A little overly melodramatic at times and I agree with the final few minutes being a disappointment but overall I enjoyed it. It's always a pleasure watching Walter Matthau and it was definitely different seeing him kick some butt lol. I'm just starting to get familiar with Nicholas Ray's films and I'd have to say that I have a feeling that I will possibly like more of his films more than Bigger than Life. I give it a 4/5.
