Kind of a boring month. Would have much rather had Z on Blu Ray!

You know what? You guys have had the luxury of paying very low prices for movies in the US! When I started to import criterion collection DVD's back in 1999-2001 to Denmark, I had to pay 75 dollars per film (based on todays exchange rate)!! Of course it is nice when movies are cheap, but it is not a fundamental right. We should be happy that Criterion exists and support them!

I don't think 49.95 dollars is too much!

I think that a SRP of $49.95 is over the top! All the other studios have been lowering their SRP so this must be some kind of mistake? I emailed John Mulvaney about it, lets see if he can confirm that it's a misprint?

Yeah. I love the Criterion discs, but $50 is way too high for my blood. Even if other retailers mark the price down a bit, they'll still be much higher than they are now.

I'm hoping that when they announce Soderbergh's "Ché" it won't be $99.99.

Can anyone help me which of these Criterions are worth buying?

The Last Emperor
The Chungking Express
Bottle Rocket
The Last Metro
The Man who fell to Earth

I already own all of the other releases and I'm quite hesitant to order The Last Emperor because of all the negative reviews concerning the picture quality.

I like all of those, but "The Man Who Fell To Earth" certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea.....

The Last Metro and Chungking are fantastic..... Bottle Rocket is Hysterical, and The Last Emperor is a beautiful, and powerful film.... not sure why it's getting bad reviews....

Is Bottle Rocket worth the blind buy? I was impressed with The 400 Blows and The Third Man, hmm..

I fear it's not a misprint, and we're being shafted.
I am disappointed especially after their statement saying they would price Blu-ray releases the same as the equivalent DVD release.
Good news that they seem to be moving to 3 Blu-ray titles per month, but whereas before it cost $50/month to keep up with the BD releases, from October it will cost $100!!!

You seem to be a Criterion expert, I was thinking on getting The Last Emperor on Blu but it's has only one cut of the film(theatrical) whereas the Criterion DVD has BOTH,the aspect ratio also seems to be different than the old Artisan release. Apocalypse Now Complete Dossier also had a similar ratio problem. I think both films had the same DP.

Beta Man? An expert? Hahahaha!

Yes, but the cut on the blu-ray is the "preferred" Director's Cut. You're missing out on the extended television cut that was more or less an obligated cut to the studio.

And yes, both "The Last Emperor" and "Apocalypse Now" have the same DP, Vittorio Storaro. Since the making of those movies, he has preferred his Univisium aspect ratio of 2.00:1 for the home video releases when he is involved.

I rented this on dvd (gasp!!) and it looked so amazing. I'm sure the criterion blu will be smoking. Oh, and the movie kicks ass too, so it's got that going for it as well.

Well, Amazon has the pre-order price for the Howards End blu-ray set at $29.99 so far. Most of the Criterions usually start at $27.99 on Amazon, anyway, so two extra bucks isn't so bad. We'll just have to see how it is when "Monsoon Wedding" and "Wings Of Desire" have pre-order placeholders.

CC

EDIT: Was just pointed out that the MSRP is still listed as $39.95 on Amazon's site. So, this is before the $10 price hike. Better jump on it now!

That's probably because they haven't been notified of the change in list price. So if you're at all interested in that movie, I suggest you preorder it ASAP.
