I try to limit my budget to five titles. Six max. I only have around 35 Criterion's so there's still a lot out there for me to decide on.

My Criterion collection is up to 256 titles now, so I made a serious attempt at owning a "serious film library", but now I wonder, who cares? If I'm going to expend all this energy and money into establishing a "serious film library", who am I impressing other than myself? I have prob. another 200-300 blu-rays and another 100 dvds to round up my film library, but at this point, with digital becoming so ubiquitous, I'm starting to jump on the "digital bandwagon" because of its convenience. I don't think physical media is dying out anytime soon though, but I'm veering towards digital now.

Golf is an insanely expensive hobby. I play once in a while. Clubs cost a ton, a sleeve of decent balls costs $10-12. My uncle plays a few times a week and spends $90-120 a round usually because he doesn't like to play on public courses because the pace of play is slow. I have a buddy who buys new suits all the time and new watches. I'm always amazed. You need 2-3 nice suits and maybe one watch, but this guy just compiles them and rarely wears a lot of them. Everyone has their hobbies, but film or album or book collections are just viewed as more niche.

Yeah, film buying is a relatively inexpensive hobby compared to others. I was a big LEGO collector a few years ago and could easily spend over $700 per year. I'm pretty sure some years over 1k was spent. Decreasing interest+rising prices made me cut back on LEGO buying, and I haven't gotten a set since 2015. Hell, buying video games on release date will cost you $60. For that price, I see around 8 movies in theaters per month with a decent mix of matinee pricing. Blu-Rays are a fun hobby to me, and I don't have a huge issue spending several hundred per year on them.

What do I care what anyone else (other than possible my wife) thinks about my hobby in the first place. Bills paid, Retirement funded, Kids college fully paid, mortgage paid. The rest is mine

I'm sure I spend less on my hobby yearly than they spend on making the lawn green and manicured within an inch of its life (literally) or their Winnegago, or their Golf Fees/Club/Trips.
Heck I spend less total than some my friends spend on Shoes/Purses/manicures/$500 Hairstyles/$100 a pop neckties and certainly buying the new BMW/Mercedes every 2-3 years.
I have a neighbour who changes his top of the range BMW every year. He spends more in depreciation in twelve months than I am likely to spend on my entire CD, DVD and vinyl collection over my lifetime, yet people think I am crazy for spending money on these things, and never bat an eyelid at someone poring £20k+ a year on car depreciation

As long as the option is available, I'll always buy physical media. Don't get me wrong. I stream and rent a lot of movies online. I just can't bring myself to ever buy movies digitally. It doesn't feel complete to me. If I buy a blu-ray and have a physical copy in my hand, then I feel like I actually own it. More people may be buying less physical media. I know people who are buying less and less movies every year. But when you see the incredible effort that companies like Criterion, Arrow Video, Scream Factory, Plain Archive, Manta Lab, etc. are putting into the movies they release, how can you NOT buy physical media? They're releasing content, artwork, and packaging that you can't get when you buy a digital copy of a movie.

I have throttled back from about twenty titles per sale to five or less; partly due to saturation, partly due to the awful exchange rate for us Brits, and very much due to UK Criterions. Oh, and the UK boutique labels, who are on an Andy Murray/Johanna Konta* style roll.

The NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD news has gotten me way excited for October announcements, so now I'm speculating for the last three month of 2017.

If Criterion does indeed have the rights to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS again, I think October would be the perfect month to drop it.

I'm thinking the Hughes' will drop in November, two big releases for the BN sale.

If WEST SIDE STORY is coming, I can see that being a December release for Christmas.

Hopefully we get a Chaplin or a Lloyd in the mix too. Haven't seen either of those guys this year.

Probably no more Wenders this year, though I'm still hopeful on END OF THE WORLD, especially since it'll be on TCM in two weeks.

Some potentially big money makers for them on the immediate horizon. Hopefully paves the way for more obscure acquisitions.

I just spent £160 on the UCS snowspeeder. That is nothing compared to the upcoming UCS Millennium Falcon which will cost at least 600, is the holy grail of sets & the original is actually more valuable than gold

And just check out this porsche

I assume we'll see the following before year end.

New/upgrade Bergman
New/upgrade Bertolucci
New/upgrade Fellini
New/upgrade Jarmusch
New/upgrade Wong Kar-wai (Chungking Express, Happy Together)

A Face in the Crowd
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Lure
Night of the Living Dead
A Place in the Sun
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Has talk about After Hours quieted down, or do people still think it was in the New Years hint?

Is the Rossellini set with Stromboli worth picking up? I've heard it has framing issues. Is that true?

Because changing BMW's is a sign of status so it's a more socially acceptable form of consumption.

As you get older the expectation is that you focus on big ticket items and place less emphasis on the small 'trivial' things.

Has Bergman's trilogy been given the HD treatment yet?

As for Fellini, hopefully Juliet of The Spirits is on the way, but my dream pick would be Nights of Cabiria, which they no longer have the rights to correct?

It's been pretty quiet all around. I still think it was hinted at in the New Years drawing, but I know the clock newsletter hint was for Meantime. I wish something would come up so we could be closer to finally seeing Criterion release it.

I remember an Alex Ross Perry phantom page popping up on the site a month or two ago. Maybe we'll be getting one of his movies in the collection before the year's end?

I think the first 5 on your list are more likely for 2018.
