I assume Il Bidone.

Hell, buying video games on release date will cost you $60. For that price, I see around 8 movies in theaters per month with a decent mix of matinee pricing. Blu-Rays are a fun hobby to me, and I don't have a huge issue spending several hundred per year on them.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention about the 1/6 figure collecting which is now INSANE

It started out small with the sideshow ones around $50 then hot toys entered the picture redefining the field but at a cost. Figures were limited & came out not that often.

Skip to today & prices are$250 if you are lucky, coming out all the time. Don't ask how variant of Iron Man there are. The MCU destroyed it IMO. So you are basically paying $250 upwards for a 12" doll & don't even get me started on the custom figures

What do I care what anyone else (other than possible my wife) thinks about my hobby in the first place. Bills paid, Retirement funded, Kids college fully paid, mortgage paid. The rest is mine

I'm sure I spend less on my hobby yearly than they spend on making the lawn green and manicured within an inch of its life (literally) or their Winnegago, or their Golf Fees/Club/Trips. Heck I spend less total than some my friends spend on Shoes/Purses/manicures/$500 Hairstyles/$100 a pop neckties and certainly buying the new BMW/Mercedes every 2-3 years.
It's interesting as your profile shows you owning 1 blu-ray and 201 dvds and this website is blu-ray.com. Unless you chose not to add the titles to your profile on this site, or you chose to only focus on dvds? I am not judging, but I'm just curious.

You might have missed my point... along with everyone else who agreed with you.

And that is, what happens when someone like me who said those exact words you wrote now has become disillusioned and no longer has as much interest in buying and owning blu-rays?

What does a person do then to become re-inspired to impress himself?

What happens when a hobby no longer becomes a hobby anymore?

What then?

Should I feel ashamed that I no longer have any interest in collecting films in order to fill a void in my life to somehow make me happy?

If I no longer enjoy buying and owning as many blu-rays as I used to, am I supposed to stop complaining of my first world problem?

I never believed in buying digital films, because frankly, I think its too convenient and there is a risk of data loss.

Then again, if I had to move around a lot, taking 5 bins of blu-rays with me would be difficult if I suddenly chose a minimalist lifestyle and having all the movies in digital format would be much more possible.

But I guess I shouldn't dare utter any blasphemy regarding "going digital", because after all, its total blasphemy.

I know people who are buying less and less movies every year. But when you see the incredible effort that companies like Criterion, Arrow Video, Scream Factory, Plain Archive, Manta Lab, etc. are putting into the movies they release, how can you NOT buy physical media? They're releasing content, artwork, and packaging that you can't get when you buy a digital copy of a movie.
I totally understand, and this is why I still buy blu rays.

However, aside from packaging, couldn't everything you mentioned become digitized too? The film can be digitized, the supplements can be digitized and yes the artwork (via scans) can be digitized. I guess the packaging can be scanned or photographed too and then re-printed on a 3D printer someday.

Also, how many people are buying the release for the supplements as opposed to the film?

Think of this, if for some reason your blu ray copy of a movie was stolen, lost or damaged (such as in a flood as TheGreatOwl once experienced), in theory, having the digital version means you can reproduce the title as many times as you want for your own use (barring any illegalities) and also have it burned to physical media for personal use (without the high quality packaging of course).

I personally believe that Criterion ought to release digital copies with their physical media as a secondary option in case of unforeseen future catastrophes. Maybe I'm being an alarmist, but its just smart to have as many options as possible.

I am physical media all the way, but you do realize your digital collection is stored in the cloud and not tied to a physical device, right? Granted, the cloud isn't 100% reliable either, but it's far safer than the doomsday scenario you're worrying about.

Well, that's why you have BACKUP! I have two x 8 terabyte external hard drives backed up with the same duplicate data, so in case one drive fails, I still have a second drive to re-back up again.

I like both physical and non-physical media for both reasons of security (disc) vs. convenience (digital).

As for the "cloud", I never liked the cloud so I'm old school and just back up on several external hard drives and I only watch movies on television screens and sometimes laptops (but never phones). David Lynch would be proud of me.

Seems like a rather extreme position to take. Again, though, like you, I too prefer physical media.

I was using that as an example how having digital media stores on a device or in the cloud isn't always reliable because anything could happen with the device or the cloud. No doomsday scenario in sight.

Anyway ... is anyone planning on placing an order online soon?

Whenever possible I am always physical media. Gotta have the films, music, books inhand. How do you get a person to sign digital files? I don't know how people can do digital comics, sure it saves space but ugh. And as for films, you loose all the extras

I may buy a song or 2 if it's just one that I like or something I just discovered that has been around for ages.

I feckin' can't stand smartphones!!! Mobile phones are for 2 things - making calls & texts, not spending the whole day glued to the screen taking selfies, spoiling concerts, checking facebook & tweeting that you've just had a shit

Most people I know mostly watch mainstream newer Hollywood films and binge watch TV shows. I have two friends who still collect physical copies of films and they're the only two people I know personally who watch a lot of older, less mainstream stuff. But most people are content to cycle through a lot of mainstream stuff, so it would be odd for those individuals to collect discs IMO. People who frequent film boards with wide-ranging, exotic taste in films are such a small percentage of the population, but if you do have more exotic taste, collecting physically at least to a point is essential. There are a lot of films being released by indy labels that may be very difficult to see in the future. The arc of the film industry and audiences is certainly trending in the direction of more mindless entertainment, so older, more rare films could certainly fall further down the priority list for streaming services in the future.

But I understand why people go digital. I've gone digital mostly with books. I still own copies of books by my favorite writers, but newer stuff I read on my tablet. I prefer reading physical copies of books, but you have to make sacrifices somewhere.

Dude, it's only going to get worse. I went to Phoenix a few months ago for work and stayed in a hotel near a mall. I walked over to grab lunch a few days and there were a bunch of teens around. Holy hell, these kids are addicted to their phones. Like they sit and have lunch with a friend and don't even talk, just look at their f**king phones. It's pathetic. I mean, I look at my phone some, but take time to take in the world around you sometime.

Sort of related but do you think Cannes were right to have included that Netflix film this year?

I've only gone digital for music as it's much easier to store thousands of songs on my computer than numerous albums on a shelf, not to mention I feel jewel cases always find a way to crack after a certain amount of time.

Maybe I could see myself going digital for video games as I won't have to wait for my copy to arrive before I can play with friends. Plus, it doesn't require you to get up and switch out discs.

I've had a Kindle and I did read a few books on there, but it lacked the awesomeness of holding a book in your hands, flipping the pages, and breathing in that paper scent. Plus it's refreshing to not stare at a screen.

I can't possibly fathom ever going digital for film. Nope, nope, nope.

Yes indeed. I write about this all the time in my monthly poems. It's the sheepleization and dehumanization of the human race. We can no longer write "Oh, kids these days", because technology like this never existed. What this is doing on a planetary scale is incomprehensible. We are now officially turning into bionic beings, with our minds slowly being replaced by silicon and metal transistors. Our brains are re-wiring and our phones are slot machines, more powerful than actual drugs, as we are flooded with imagery and words controlled by the "Attention economy". These teenagers who are hooked into the matrix are now owned by "them" whether they know it or not.

I know. I honestly can't understand parents who give them to children even younger than 10. I guess it's peer pressure. Their friends have them, & it's the cool thing to have so if you don't have one, you get left out

You see programmes about people with no money/in debt but they can still afford a smartphone? It is 100% an addiction you see people crossing the road without even looking up from the screen to see if there are any cars coming or just walking & not avoiding people

This modern day smartphone addiction very much reminds me of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode of "The Game", when everyone is addicted to this thing.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I don't go to many places where teens hang out, so I really don't see the habits of these kids often. It's brutal. I sat at lunch and watched all of these teens get seated at their tables and have lunch. They walk to the table looking at their phones, then they don't converse at all. And they're never looking at interesting things. It's always photos on social media or things like that. It's not like they're reading articles to educate themselves.

There was a table where parents were sitting with their two teenage kids and the kids were staring at their phones the entire time and the parents gave up because the kids are clearly so bored by conversation. Then, I went to a baseball game last month and sat in back of this couple with their teenage daughter. She stared at pictures on social media 95% of the game. It's like, why bother taking her? She can do the same thing sitting at home.
