I found a copy of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence at Best Buy today. They had two each of Thin Red Line and this title. This is the first Best Buy i've seen that had Merry Christmas stocked.

Ok now you're just bragging. I haven't seen either at any Best Buy!

I wonder when the Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence review will be up?

So now that we know all of Criterion's releases releases what is your favorite month's releases? Here are my favorite month releases on Blu-Ray in order from best. In the end half of 2010 is seems like Criterion is doing a much better job potting out the bulk of their releases on Blu. Hopefully that continues into 2011.

November - Hard to top 10 good films, including a great
BBS set.
541. Night of the Hunter
542. Antichrist
543. Modern Times
544. Head
545. Easy Rider
546. Five Easy Pieces
547. Drive, He Said
548. A Safe Place
549. The Last Picture Show
550. The King of Marvin Gardens

Oct - Love Seven Samurai and Paths of Glory.
2. Samurai Seven
537. The Magician
538. Paths of Glory
539. House
540. The Darjeeling Limited

Sept
57. Charade
408. Breathless
535. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
536. The Thin Red Line

May
10. Walkabout
30. M
516. Stagecoach
518. By Brakhage

June
235. The Leopard
519. Close-up
520. Everlasting Memories
521. Mystery Train
522. Red Desert

Worst:

Aug - Blu-Ray missed out on the good stuff like the Sternberg set.
48. Black Orpheus
533. Crumb

Chad, my favs are:

March
Dillinger Is Dead

Bigger Than Life

Letters from Fontainhas:
Three Films by Pedro Costa

and

November (Night of the Hunter, BBS set) & June (Close-up, Red Desert, and The Leopard)

I wouldn't call August the worst (the films, 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg and the Pialat film are some of the best this year.)

December is by far, the weakest.

I was only ranking the months based on Blu-Ray releases. If you include regular DVD releases then August isn't that bad and December is by far the worst month.

This year has been quite strong but my favorite months, based entirely on the films in question would be these three, in this order.

September:
The Thin Red Line (my second favorite film of all time)
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Breathless
Charade

October:
Seven Samurai (my all time favorite film)
Paths of Glory
Hausu
The Magician
The Darjeeling Limited

December:
Cronos (Blade II aside, Del Toro is one of my favorite filmmakers and I love this film to death)
Videodrome (classic Cronenberg art-horror. Love it)

I have Chungking and Bottle Rocket on DVD, and will certainly try to pick those up as soon as possible too..... (planning on getting ALL of them, as they come out.... )
I've got Bottle Rocket and Chungking Express and realy enjoyed watching them for the first time. have RAN and The Last Metro on my willing list. won't double-dip The Last Emperor which i think is not comparable with the DVD collection pack i bought early last year.

There are essays on the films in the Criterion Collection on their website (Just go to one of his films pages and at the bottom of them should have a link with a essay. Also his wiki page has a bunch of stuff on his films surrealism, etc.

I just finished watching a NetFlix rental of "Come and See"...I'm speechless.

If Kino, Criterion, or MoC don't pick this up for release on BD, then it would be a real crime...I haven't had a film hit me that hard in quite a while.

It makes you say Saving Private Ryan who? Come and See makes SPR look like E.T.

Kino has this, so it would be awesome to see a BD release.

I never thought I would agree with you on that...but I do.

Stark, realistic and VERY depressing...that poor kid!

Yeah...the DVD from NetFlix was from Kino...but I'll bet that MoC would do a GREAT release of it.

Any idea who owns the rights to it?

Tin Drum coming next week...can't wait to check that out.

Pro-B might help with who owns the rights in the UK, but I am guessing Kino holds the rights to releases of it here. You should maybe post your liking for it on the Kino thread. Maybe they read it!?! Won't hurt I guess. That's why I still have my Hopper sig. I know they won't release it because of me, but if they get more requests for The Last Movie, my request would help it. So I keep it up.
