I wonder if his popularity has waned. One thing's for sure, communication has changed since his talky, leisurely dramas were released. Or at least communication channels and how those forms limit and influence our relationships with others (and the time we spend on them).
The previous Rohmer's Six Moral Tales DVD went OOP. I at least like to have My Night at Maud's on BluRay since its one of my favorite French films. I really didn't get into Claire's Knee and haven't seen the other remaining ones.

Going back to Election, is there any other Reese Witherspoon film that can get an induction to the Collection?

Inherent Vice and Mud are two that immediately stand out with Criterion potential. Walk the Line and American Psycho are more commercial options too.

I'm not a Breakfast Club fan, but its inclusion in the Criterion Collection makes complete sense to me, and look how many people are happy about it.

Just don't buy it, and buy the films that interest you.

I'm getting the Pabst films from Masters of Cinema at a fraction of the cost of the Criterion ones, but Young Mr Lincoln is a must buy for me.

The Eclipse set looks right up my alley, but it really pains me to buy DVDs these days :P

Inherent Vice and Mud would be amazing choices for CC.

Maud's is definitely one of his best. Honestly, Claire's Knee is decidedly not as good. I appreciate it's dive into Lolita-esque waters, but, obviously, it's nowhere near as intriguing (*as the book of course) considering Rohmer's gentle humanism.

I do highly recommend Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle. Of the Rohmers I've seen, it's probably the only one I'll watch on a regular basis.

Some people are really bitter about Criterion releasing The Breakfast Club, eh? It's an iconic movie from the 1980s, so why wouldn't Criterion release this? This is a huge deal. John Hughes was a great writer and director who made films that resonated with young people and dealt with themes that many can still relate to three decades later. Also: The movie has much more replay value than any of the other movies Criterion is releasing that month. So it has that going for it also.

I'm in for Young Mr. Lincoln. BTW Criterion - don't forget that Heaven Can Wait (another Fox film) also needs an upgrade!

"The Breakfast Club" probably has more meaning to people in who were in their teens or early to mid 20s in 1985. As someone who was born after "The Breakfast Club" was made, it just doesn't do much for me. It's not a bad film, but there's always going to be a bit of division regarding films that hold a lot of sentimental value to people. I appreciate what a special place it has for people in a certain age group though.

I respect your opinion. I was born in 1991, but yet it means a lot to me. Again, it's because John Hughes understood teens/young people and wrote the film in a way that exemplified this 100%.

For all the people wishing that Criterion had just bundled the John Hughes films together rather than releasing them separately over time, I feel your pain.

I remember learning years ago that Criterion had several David Cronenberg films, as well as several David Lynch films, and I remember thinking the end of that year was gonna be massive and expensive, as I was naive enough to think that we had Cronenberg and Lynch box sets coming. Nope. We didn't get any of the films the rest of that year, and then they all started to trickle out, one at a time, over the next THREE years...

They don't do sets or bundles much on things they believe will sell well on their own, individually. They only seem much anymore to bundle things they don't think would sell well one at a time.

True but I’m talking about films where she’s a lead. All of these, she’s supporting. Heck, IV, Mud, and Am. Psycho, she’s borderline cameo. I’m guessing either Man in the Moon or Freeway but the former just had a Twilight Time release and the latter won’t look better than on DVD.

The correct answer is none.

I think it has more to do with what age you were when you first saw some of Hughes' teen-oriented films, regardless if it were years later after their original release or when they first came out. I was already in my mid 20's when TBC first came out, and it just didn't connect with me at that age. Maybe if I had been 7-10 years younger, it may have had more impact on me, but I'm not even sure of that. Hughes did understand teen angst and all of that way more than most of the teen sex comedies of the time, but the film still felt pretty artificial to me. Still, it definitely clicked with millions of kids at the time, and even had a terrific hit tune, and that's all that really counts. And those kids, and the kids that saw it later on video or cable, are the ones with the fond memories and the bank accounts to buy it again now. Criterion is very smart in releasing this flick.

I wasn't around then having been born in 1990, but I absolutely loved it. IMO it's an example of timeless character dynamics.

[Show spoiler]You have five individuals who couldn't be any more different, forced to spend a Saturday afternoon together in detention. Absent their peers, the stigma associated with their individual social circles begins to break down, and these kids discover that they are really more alike than they could have possibly imagined. They realize that, regardless of their athletic ability, their intellectual capabilities, or familial economic status, they face many of the same fears about the future. The rough edges that distinguish them, and have separated them, begin to soften. And in the final scene, as John Bender walks off across the football field, the group, through Brian's writing, express solidarity, and a newfound understanding, and acceptance, for each other. The ending is what the entire film is about! It's about the growth of the individual, and looking at your world through the eyes of those around you. And when Bender raises his fist, in that last second, it is a realization of self-empowerment.
So well said that I might have teared up a little.

As to the releases, I have the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Breakfast Club, but that's not going to dissuade me from picking this up.

I'll probably get the Loach film. This line in the description made me laugh out loud: "... this bracing drama from celebrated filmmaker Ken Loach takes a hard look at bureaucratic injustice and ineptitude through the eyes of an unassuming working-class hero." Wait up! No way! This doesn't sound like a Ken Loach film AT ALL!

I'm interested in the Pabst films, but I'm going to have to think about it.

I do get the annoyance at "double dips", but hey, sometimes labels just want to put out a more popular title. Or maybe business reality is they NEED to once in awhile. There are plenty of double dips I would want them to do - even ones I already own. Which is why I generally don't complain in situations like this. Besides, I haven't bought any of the Breakfast Club releases yet. I guess if i ever get it, this will be the one to get.

Even if we throw out Breakfast Club as a waste (which is silly), it's still a strong month. 2 Pabst titles and Young Mr. Lincoln. 3 titles I will certainly be getting at the first opportunity to get them on sale. I'm actually more annoyed at the Eclipse set, isn't it time to drop that and make sure everything is at least a 2K restoration? Don't get me wrong, I've found plenty of gems in their Eclipse line. But the shoddy quality is sometimes annoying.

They may have lost the rights. I imported the complete Rohmee blu set from France years ago, and now there’s a remastered set of some of his later films also coming out Region B. It’s a good reason to invest $100 into a region-free player.
