As far as I'm concerned the inclusion of the original mono track alone justifies a re-release of The Breakfast Club. The 50 mins of never-before-seen deleted scenes is a great bonus.

I love how some here feel so threatened by the release of a mainstream pop culture classic on their beloved label (you mean they speak ENGLISH!?!).

But don't worry there's plenty of Czech Goat Farmer films on the way, I'm sure...

If The Breakfast Club is getting a Criterion release, then I think it's only fair to ask about Weekend at Bernies.

I don't want any funny looks or snide comments either.

...Bernie is one of the great existential characters in modern cinema.

In a sense, we’re all Bernie. We just don’t know it yet.

Easily the best decision I have ever made in my Blu-ray collecting history.

It's not a bad film, but there's always going to be a bit of division regarding films that hold a lot of sentimental value to people. I appreciate what a special place it has for people in a certain age group though.
Nostalgia certainly seems the primary culprit for The Breakfast Club's over-inflated status among a certain generation. Perhaps I was a bit hyperbolic in comparing the film's quality to Armageddon; however, like that infamous title, TBC is blandly puerile in its appeal. As Pauline Kael deftly put it, it's about a bunch of stereotypes who complain that other people see them as stereotypes.

Also, considering the film's notoriously-dubious sexual politics, I would have found, say, A Face in the Crowd a release much more in tune with the current zeitgeist. (Although, acknowledging the myriad of "unseen" factors which help determine the timing of a title's release on disc, I'll admit that such a complaint maybe amounts to little more than whining on my part.)

Like many of Pauline's critiques, this one is clever but misses the mark. The film is about how they see themselves more than anything else.

I will admit that much of the personal connection I have with the film probably has to do with the fact that I was in high school when it was released. But it's not nostalgia. It's more that I immediately connected to what was going on with these personalities and that has carried over, even nearly thirty years later.

ETA: Just to make things clear, Kael is one of my favorite critics. But like Bosley Crowther, another favorite, it seems like she was at times more interested in sounding clever or scathing than actually taking a fair look at the film.

I'm region free but I couldn't justify the hefty price tag on the French set. The Uk one however looks like a must have once it drops (even though I own two of the titles anyway).

So I guess Criterion just has streaming rights then?

I was truly waiting for that announcement. I'm glad to read there will be 50 minutes of deleted scenes in this new release of The Breakfast Club but the movie had already a fine remaster.

I'm pretty sure 16 Candles isn't happening.

I went region-free at the beginning of the year, and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Nah, Kael was way more thoughtful and rigorous in her criticism than Crowther ever was in his.

From what I heard they were planning on releasing it (hence the previously shared photo and new year's hint), but now they won't be able to. Sounded like Breakfast Club was almost a consolation prize.

Not trying to be a downer, just sharing info to assist with expectations.

What makes you think we would laugh it off?

Don't let anyone tell you what you should be watching. Even Tyler Perry movies can seem entertaining when you're drunk.

Besides, Bernie was indeed a total dude.

You might wanna let Mulvaneys know about this film, I bet they love it too.

I wouldn't ever rule out the possibilities, They've certainly restored my faith in humanity with the Le Samourai Blu-ray.
