I went into it knowing
[Show spoiler]nothing about the murder/thriller aspect of it! Was a great experience having expected a Vicky Cristina Barcelona style rom-com!

"Match Point" has region free releases from Australia and Germany. Pretty nice transfer, I'd assume they're the same. Since Woody Allen doesn't allow extras, I'd just pick up one of those releases. Maybe Criterion could acquire it and do a 4K restoration, but I wouldn't count on it.

I pointed out earlier in the thread that the German release actually has a decent amount of extras including a 6 min interview with Allen. Definitely an outlier when it comes to his home video releases.

Interesting. I have the Aussie release, which is bare bones, but I'm pleased with its technical aspects. I just noticed the German BD is up on Amazon for 20 bucks. Worth picking up for anyone who's a fan of the film who doesn't own it on BD.

"Double-dipping" he says. I've mentioned this about a hundred pages back (or in another thread) but this is my 6th purchase of this title.

Non-sequitur: Tell those Atlanta Falcons to steer clear of my Jaguars. We're coming for that trophy on Feb 4th.

I'm not into football, but I felt bad that so many of my friends here in Atlanta were disappointed last year.

I used the term, “double-dipping”, loosely, because I've owned The Breakfast Club in multiple editions on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray.

I'm pretty sure it would be a quadruple dip for me.

Might as well wait for a sale, or trade for it, to soften the blow.

I'm a lifelong Chargers fan (still root for them even after their ridiculous move to LA) and they needed the Titans to lose to get into the playoffs. I didn't appreciate Bortles shitting the bed on Sunday against the Titans haha. Dude was horrendous, although Westbrook's terrible drop in the end zone didn't help.

Five high school students with vastly different backgrounds are forced to endure the company of one another during a Saturday morning detention. The affluent popular girl (Molly Ringwald), the brainy nerd (Anthony Michael Hall), the arrogant jock (Emilio Estevez), the delinquent (Judd Nelson), and the scrappy outcast (Ally Sheedy) have a common nemesis in the form of their bitter assistant principal (Paul Gleason), and, while lying low to avoid his wrath, these teens discover some unexpected truths about themselves.

The Breakfast Club was released in theaters when I was 13 years old, and everything about it resonates with me as such. The high school looks just like the high school in my hometown (although my school library did not have the funky blue neon lights around the periphery), the fashion sense, or lack thereof, of the characters was spot-on for the time, and John Hughes was cued in amazingly well to the music and mood of the day. It's difficult to believe that this movie is over 30 years old, and it still brings a smile to my face just as much now as it did when I was younger.

This 1985 film is an interesting youth-oriented update of John Ford's 1939 western, Stagecoach, which set the precedent for stories about disparate characters who discover common ground when they are thrown together by circumstance. By the end of the movie, I always feel close to each and every person, and I crack up at everyone's different styles and misadventures. The dancing scenes are just as much of a trip now as they always were, especially with the random moments of absurdity, like the shattering of a glass door as a character screams. The scene of the characters whistling the tune from The Bridge on the River Kwai is priceless.

When I watch this movie now as an adult, I take more notice of the quirks of the late Paul Gleason's school administrator character, with his pencil sculptures in his office and such. My 45 year-old self is certainly cognizant of the notion that this detention Saturday is just as torturous and godawful boring for him as it is for the teenagers.

The Simple Minds song, “Don't You (Forget About Me)”, always gets played on repeat for hours on end after I revisit this movie.

This Criterion Blu-ray gives us a terrific-looking transfer that, while taken from the same source as the 30th Anniversary Universal edition, seems to look marginally better. The brilliant 1980s soundtrack and the dialogue have never sounded better than on this disc (I chose the mono audio option for this viewing.).

I've already viewed most of the archival supplementary extras by way of previous DVD and Blu-ray editions, but it's a pleasure to go through them again. As far as new material goes, I love the present-day interviews with Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. The video essay, read by Judd Nelson, is quite amusing.

I'm not normally one to watch deleted scenes on Blu-ray discs, because there's usually a good reason why these moments were left on the cutting room floor. The same rule of thumb applies to the extra footage from The Breakfast Club that is included on this disc, but the 52 minutes go fast, and I enjoyed the stretched out sequences without being bothered by the sub-par video quality of the footage.

Well done, Criterion! It's a dream come true to see one of my favorite films given such loving treatment in the Collection.

I finally read Roadside Picnic (Arkady & Boris Strugatsky) and now I want to watch Stalker again with the book fresh on my mind. I especially enjoyed the afterward written by Boris.

Anybody had any problems with Charade freezing up? The disc looks absolutely fine but I was watching (finally unwrapped it) it yesterday and it started skipping and freezing up.

I was curious as to where in the movie people had problems, if any. I have to recheck the time that it started on move which I will do later today

Judging by the year this came out on blu ray and when you bought it it could be one of the titles that was prone to disc rot due to the pressing plant Criterion was using at the time from 2009-2011 I believe.

EDIT: Charade was confirmed as being one of the affected discs on Hi Def Digest in 2014. Criterion should still have a replacement program

One more film I loved on BluRay from Criterion would be Bresson's The Trial of Joan of Arc, while not quite as good as Dreyer's version, Bresson's version was very very good when I watched it a few years ago.
