It’s a bold statement considering films in the collection by Kurosawa, Ozu, Kobayashi and others. But I think it’s safe to say that Woman in the Dunes is among the best in the collection. If you think it’s best, then that’s what it is to you.

I happen to love it and I’m extremely particular about existential films, which is how I’d describe it. Some bore me to death, some I find interesting but have no desire to revisit, and then there are the few like WITD which I can fully absorb me, at least when I’m in that mood. It also doesn’t hurt that I also feel the David Lynch vibe when I watch it. It would be very hard to believe that this film wasn’t a major influence for him. Still, I don’t think it’s a film for everyone, so worth doing a little digging before any blind buys. Someday I’d like to read the novel on which it was based.

I like Kurosawa just fine, but Woman in the Dunes, Harakiri, and Pale Flower are the Japanese films that have stayed with me the most.

I literally watched my copy for the first time the other night. Beautifully shot and well executed. Light on plot but heavy on themes of honor and obsession.

Just watched Persona for the first time ever. Have only seen a few Bergman’s before (Seventh Seal, Summer Interlude, Summer With Monika, and Winter Light) I was generally cold on them. This however, was one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever seen. I’m not entirely sure I understood everything, but I was enraptured the entire time. Truly beautiful. Will watch again very soon.

Try his “warmer” stuff, Smiles Of A Summer Night and Wild Strawberries - my personal favorites.

Also Scenes From A Marriage.

It seems to be more of the FilmStruck thing than a physical release:

I’ve noticed that Lost in Translation and There Will Be Blood have been out of stock on Amazon for nearly 2 months now. Does this mean Criterion versions are in the works?? God I hope so!!!!

I have no inside knowledge on this stuff so take this with a grain of salt..I'm going to say they're both possible. If Criterion struck some kind of a deal with Paramount, which releases of The Virgin Suicides and No Country For Old Men would confirm, There Will Be Blood could follow(also slated to premiere on TCM next month which doesn't mean anything, just interesting).
As for Lost in Translation, Criterion hasn't released anything by Focus Features yet but they have worked with American Zoetrope(owned by the Coppola's) on Mishima and Kagemusha if I'm not mistaken(somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this). I don't know the rights situation with either film so I'll just say I'd be cautiously optimistic and nothing more.

If Criterion is going to release another Paul Thomas Anderson film I hope it's going to be Hard Eight. I love There Will Be Blood but, come on. Know what I'm sayin'?

Anyone know if I can save gift certificates on my Criterion.com account? Or do I have to use them in a time frame? I'd like to buy myself one each paycheck so I have some saved for the Sep/Oct flash sale.

The lengthy Christmas celebration sequence that opens Bergman's Fanny and Alexander has more atmosphere, warmth and magic than most Christmas films combined, and without the cloying saccharine sweetness that spoils many of them. The whole movie is masterfully done overall, and one of the greatest films on childhood and growing up.

I'd certainly recommend the extended over the theatrical, but it's a wonder and a masterpiece in either version.

I don't know how much length it has in the theatrical cut because I haven't watched it, but I usually watch the whole first episode from the TV version which is held on Christmas eve, every Christmas period.
Unfortunately this Chirstmas I didn't, because I didn't want to get bored with it.
Next year now..
