Over on the Criterion reddit page a user made a graph that showed how many Criterion films are in each collection. I wish this person could do this for all the boutique labels, to measure how well certain titles stacked against others released.

Here's the top 20 collections ranking for Blu-ray.com. You'll have to visit each BD's page to see the actual numbers though. Unsurprisingly, many of the same titles show up in the Criterion.com's top 20, just in a different order. I've bolded the ones that are similar in both.

Seven Samurai (七人の侍 / Shichinin no samurai) Criterion Oct 19, 2010
The Thin Red Line Criterion Sep 28, 2010

Fair enough. As much as it's a landmark film, I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed it as much as other romance films from the same era. I think Splendor in the Grass came out the same year and truth be told, that film would definitely receive more spins than Jules if I were to own it on blu.

At any rate you guys have me hankering to revisit it. So thanks for that. I haven't seen the film in 7 or 8 years.

I'm sure they have. That was very early in my french new wave education. Since then I've seen just about everything New Wave related, including all but two of Truffaut's films.

As a matter of fact, it's been seven or eight years since I've seen all the seminal New Wave films

Criterion needs to release more Pedro Almodóvar films on Blu-ray.

I just watched All About My Mother for the first time and loved it. I would definitely rank it as the best of the director's films I've seen thus far.

Almodóvar introduces the conflict as an homage to Cassavetes's Opening Night, setting the stage for a number of complex, relevant issues to be introduced and explored by each and every one of the unique characters.

I think they do have rights to more Almodovar but yes this one and Talk To Her need a release. AAMM definitely one of the greats.

One film I'd like to see on blu is Coherence. It's excellent and has no blu-ray release in North America.

We're a week away from the next announcement of to-be-released films. Wow. December just flew by.

Watched They Live By Night the other day, and, while it didn't blow me away or anything, I thought it was a pretty solid "lovers on the run" noir by Nicholas Ray. The signs of Ray's directorial greatness are already readily apparent here. The cinematography was really cool, even cutting-edge at times - I was surprised by how well this film holds up in terms of visuals and overall style. Oh, and Cathy O'Donnell was just beautiful here, I thought.

Very good movie.

Barnes & Noble have a 50% SRP a couple times a year (July probably next one) plus they have have a few other sales where you can purchase Criterion titles, membership discounts also..

Amazon, Deep Discount, ect have sales in the $20 - $25 range.
Also, keep an eye on Amazon in February-March. They had several titles in the sub $20 range last year, I picked up Rosemary's Baby and Bitter Rice, the latter was around $14.

That's interesting. With the sole exception of Mulholland Dr., all releases were 2012 or earlier. Will be interesting to see where it sits a few years from now.

Just wait until The Grand Budapest Hotel comes out. I'll double dip for that one.

All of these posts for best Japanese films in the collection a page back and not one mention of a Mizoguchi film. Shameful.

Just watched House last night and I absolutely loved it. I realize there aren't going to be many other films quite like it, but any recommendations of other Criterion movies that are somewhere in the ballpark?
