There has only been 5 from directors of that era (3 Godards, 400 Blows, Last Year at Marienbad). Pretty low for the era that was prob the most influential in film history. Heck the American "New Hollywood" era is pretty much America's answer to it. It's funny considering (no hating here) Wes Anderson and Kurosawa combines for 6 titles already while the whole French New Wave has 5. And it prob looks like another Kurosawa is a safe bet before another French New Wave film comes.

Everyone would love to have another wave like the "New Hollywood" scene of Hopper, Coppola, Bogdanovich, Nicholson, Lucas, Rafelson, Spielberg(), Ashby, etc, etc, but I just don't see anything coming. Hollywood today isn't ready to take chances on new, young, talent. Unless they make them director to some already written, horror remake.

Re: Criterion Cast's list. Seems totally reasonable. Yeah, just one title that's new to the collection Spine # wise, but the Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss re-issues have been a long time coming.

Let's hope an Eclipse set joins those titles (if it ends up being correct).

We haven't got any type of French release at all since Sept. If the Jan releases are true, it will still not have a French release. That might be a record with Criterion. I don't think they have gone 4+ months without one.
Looks like the weight of recent/future releases are/have been Japanese and American films.

Think of those same PS3 gamers that sit down and play Modern Warfare 2, fire up a Criterion blu ray every week.
I definitely agree with you there...I think in my case, I was getting sick of the crap that Hollywood has/continues to put out and have been looking into older classic American films that I've never seen (Night of the Hunter, etc.), French Cinema (Godard, etc.) German directors (Wenders, etc.) and any decent "Indie" films.

Blu-ray and a decent plasma TV have really opened my eyes to watching films. Criterion and THIS forum has been a liberal education and NetFlix allows me to experiment and taste all the goodies on the dessert plate.

Other brilliant companies like Eureka!/Masters of Cinema are just the icing on the cake and prompted me to finally invest in a region free player.

For what it's worth...THANKS Guys for your input, feedback, and for helping to educate me in areas where I am clearly a novice! (*getting a large lump in throat*)

Wow, lackluster review for House on the site. I thought the film was outstanding, but I guess it is a matter of taste.

That's why I've opted lately to rent and see if any film is worth a purchase.

Most of the titles I'm interested in will wait for the supposed November sale. The only Criterion titles I'll buy this month are "Darjeeling" and "Paths".

It's a rather weird movie and I think you need to be in a certain frame of mind to see it

This movie has me intrigued...but the review is very lackluster. I usually expect to see all 5's on a criterion release.

I just bumped this up on my netflix account...

I love the original "The Vanishing"!! That was my first CC DVD (out of only 3). Here's hoping it makes its way to BD eventually!

It's not a bad review and I pretty much agree with it. Hausu is an important Japanese film, but it's not on par with some of the other films in the Criterion collection. It's more of an hidden gem that Criterion has rescued from obscurity in the US.

I'd compare it to something like Jigoku... An acquired taste for sure.

I am looking forward to it immensely. Mostly because of what I read on here. You guys are a highly influental crowd. As someone said earlier, I believe this forum is the reason why I've started collecting Criterion films and viewing them each with an open mind. I've loved practically every one I've seen so far, and even the ones I was not too excited about got me thinking about them well after I saw them.

After looking up what titles CG said may be coming out...even if they may not be the correct titles, I must say that I am excited for yet another month.

It wasn't in the "collection," per say, but it was part of the Merchant Ivory discs that Criterion/Janus has released.

There's like 17 of those Merchant Ivory films.
