Criterion, no question. The Arrow is a little overly brightened and Criterion has a better set of extras, including a second De Palma film, Murder a a Mod

The Arrow release is a little brighter but not to the point where whites are clipped or something, and these things work both ways. I suspect one can adjust one's TV settings to get either sort of image, with no signficant loss of quality. I would say the extras on both sets are interesting and there's no clear winner on that count. I have the Criterion release, and I found Murder a la Mod a one-tme watch, an experimental student film rather than an early masterpiece of any sort. The Arrow booklet (if you can still get it) is supposed to have a discussion between Tarantino and De Palma which should be interesting. But then Criterion has the discussion with another film geek Noah Baumbach, so dilemmas either way.

Another big loss. I'll never be able to forget a single second from Shoah.

RIP Claude Lanzmann.

Thoughts on Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir? I'm sure I'll like the films but want to know about the transfers since it's a DVD set.

I haven't followed this thread in a while, so forgive me if I'm bringing up an old topic in here ... but has anybody tried using the "My Criterion" section of the criterion.com website? The last few times I've tried updating my personal collection there, I get a message saying "Under Construction", along with a blurb saying that the "My Criterion" section is being overhauled and will be temporarily offline. Just wondering how long this has been going on ... seems like it has been a while. I'm also curious what people think about the new layout on Criterion's website. Maybe it takes some getting used to, but so far it doesn't seem real intuitive to me. (Then again, I'm old. )

Been broken for awhile and no, I don't like the new layout either.

Yes, it's being revamped and will return in a couple months.

Traffic, and length of stay have been down on the their site since the revamp, so I'd say most people probably don't care for it. I barely go there now. I don't buy into form over function.

By calling, maybe only 10 people call, and the employee can do it immediately instead of potentially missing the website reservation.
What's the problem with ringing them up anyway? You are going into that store anyway and it's better then just a giant pile due to people not picking stuff up for ages. Sucks for people with speech impediment though.

Transfers are fine for DVD, and it’s one of the best Eclipse sets film wise.

Thanks guys for bringing this to my attention. Decided to place another B&N order, so I added this to the lot. Haven't see a whole lot of the Nikkatsu films, but I really dug the few I've seen.

Others in the same order: Broadcast News, Moonrise, Tampopo, Woman in the Dunes, Letter Never Sent.

As I stated before, I never saw a "giant pile" when I went to pick up my orders. Maybe a handful, at most. Anyway, I'll be calling the store to reserve my next sale order after the 17th, and I'll report back on my experience then.

Woman in the Dunes is one of the all time classics IMHO.

Yesterday I watched Part I of the Ivan the Terrible films. I thought it was excellent. I watched it on Kanopy and it had Janus films at the beginning. Would they still be the ones to put it out on blu here in the states?
Sure would love for them to bring these two to blu. I think I'll watch part II this weekend.

That battle scene was epic. The set pieces are out of this world! And wow I love those shadows.

can't add much to what's already been said, but I saw all of the films in that set. I think the one that is the most highly regarded was just 'ok,' while I liked another in the set quite a bit more, although I already forgot which.. I think it was Rusty Knife.

the transfers are fine..

Hoping that Lost Highway gets announced for October. Last year’s October slate was pretty eclectic and it had Lynch's Fire Walk With Me so you never know. More Lynch please!

I’d like to see Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone & Russell’s Altered States too.
