You know it's bad when Echo Bridge put out Blu-rays for tons of those Miramax titles (including Pokémon FFS), but when Lionsgate got the rights to that catalogue they discontinued all those Blu-rays and only released DVDs. They could have simply continued pressing all of those titles, but they didn't.

If they won't even take the easiest option for titles already on disc in HD, why should we expect them to create new transfers for titles already on DVD?

They literally hate money, it's as simple as that.

Even worse is many of those early 2000s Artisan DVDs are some of the worst ever produced. Many of them are close to VHS rips. And those films are just languishing. If you put on an old Artisan DVD, it's shocking how poor it looks.

John Sayles's book Thinking in Pictures: The Making of Matewan is one of the more insightful books about filmmaking I've ever read.

Well, I'd certainly love a Criterion blu upgrade of "Sisters".


However, that cake tweet was a response to a tweet on Filmstruck about it being Barbara Stanwyck's birthday. Criterion re-tweeted the Filmstruck tweet about her b-day, and then posted the cake as a response. As to say, "Happy Birthday, Barbara Stanwyck".


So, we may have jumped the gun on reading into that.


Still, I would love a "Sisters" upgrade just the same, and at Halloween, no less....

Since Todd Haynes has been mentioned, I feel like the most appropriate choice from his works would be Far From Heaven, which has not had a US release yet on blu-ray. It also fits in line with Criterion's love for Douglas Sirk. I did recently discover a Canadian release at my local Alamo Drafthouse for rent but there is little information about the release's quality on this website.

Speaking of that film, the other movie with Julianne Moore from that year is also strangely absent on blu-ray: The Hours. Frankly, I just want a release of this at all, but maybe with Criterion's Paramount deal these last few years, that this would be one up for consideration. I feel like both of these films would be very interesting choices for Criterion, although Far From Heaven seems like a more likely candidate.

Far From Heaven would definitely be in Criterion's wheelhouse + no US BD release.

Any other books you could recommend? I've only ever read a single book on film, about Bergman, and I found it lacking. Particularly because it was written in the 60's well before he stopped making films.

If you're all region, there's a Region B/C release that isn't expensive from Amazon.uk: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Hours-Blu-ray/37068/ I have this one and it's a nice upgrade from the DVD, but could definitely benefit from the Criterion treatment.
