You should just email! I feel it doesn’t hurt to just ask!

It happens, occasionally. The main issue I've had with the packaging has been cuts in the booklets. There's what I believe to be a small flaw with the Scanavo case; they have these little notches that stick out, and when the case is jostled around, the book can bump up against it, and get a bit dinged up. Most of the time, it's been pretty minor, and I've lived with it. A few times the books were actually ripped up in the same spot, making me think that there was an issue with the book prior to its being inserted into the case. They've replaced them for me at no cost. A few times, I've decided to replace the ones that had some minor dings-I couldn't in good conscience ask them to pay for it, so I just sent them $5 in Paypal, and they shipped me a replacement. That $5 includes shipping, and the booklet came in a stiff cardboard envelope that could withstand a nuclear blast.

If you can live with it, just chalk it up to an occasional bump. If you've never had Criterion send you a replacement for packaging, e-mail Jon Mulvaney (mulvaney@criterion.com), and they'll ship the first replacement to you for free. The first blu-ray disc I bought from them was On The Waterfront. I got it through Amazon, but the packaging was pretty messed up, not just the outer slip, but the inner tray and the booklet, too. When I spoke with Mulvaney, they were good enough to replace all the packaging for me after I showed them pictures and my Amazon receipt. Right then and there, Criterion made a customer for life.

Email mulvaney@criterion.com and ask what you need to do. They may have you mail it in to send you a replacement, or with proof of purchase, or they might just replace it outright. I know Criterion does stand behind their product, and whenever customers have received defective releases, they'e made it right, be it just an individual disc that was defective, or a larger number of discs that suffered from disc rot.

Let us know what happens!

The Confession is showing OOP.

https://www.criterion.com/films/27873-the-confession

This is troubling. I saw a rumor elsewhere that El Norte might be going OOP as well, but not sure how much credibility that has.

Anyone know anything?

Interesting. The Confession is on my list but I've yet to pick it up. First stop B&N this morning, I think. And does this mean State of Siege is destined to follow?

Sorry, I don't know about the other title.

I was thinking only the other day that it's been a while since you posted.

Yeah, it has been awhile. Sorry.

State of Siege is still in print.

Was The Confession ever on FilmStruck? If it was, it no longer is, so the OOP is likely real and not a website error.

State of Siege is still on FilmStruck, so hopefully it stays in-print and available long enough for me to get a copy next week.

Doesn't Criterion usually give a heads-up about these things? Pretty odd for it to just go OOP without warning.

Not usually. It seems like they do it more lately when releasing a new version, like when the dual format version goes out of print and they release separate DVD and BD.

Some notables like the Sternberg set, Nanook of the North, and many others went OOP without warning. I believe we knew in advance of the StudioCanal situation. And I’d hope that if there was going to be a major shift in rights, they would tell us.

Probably not anything I’d be overly concerned about, but if I don’t own them, then I’d certainly be buying The Confession and El Norte right now. They are both worthwhile purchases IMO anyway.

Yeah, I think the StudioCanal OOP's were the last time they gave an OOP warning and I'm not even sure they gave a heads up warning for the third wave of StudioCanal OOPs.

I hope the out of print Confession means a Costa-Gavras set gets announced soon! I need that Z upgrade!

Contacted Criterion about The Confession, and they confirmed it is indeed OOP.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, it's true. We've lost the rights to THE CONFESSION and it's now out of print. If we're able to get them back we'll be happy to make it available again.

Thanks for your support,
Jon Mulvaney

No word yet on State of Siege though, right?

Ordered both from B&N this morning regardless since they had stock of both.

I don't recall one for when the Six Moral Tales DVD set went OOP. All I know is I wanted to buy it and then it was like $200+. Though when I watch the films on TCM they still have the Janus logo on them.

They've been letting DVD box sets go OOP, while they still have the rights to the films in the boxes. I suspect that it is no longer financially viable to keep the DVD box sets in print, but they will eventually release the films on Blu.

Three different B&N, and one copy each of The Confession - all with dinged cases and a loose disc inside. It was as if the first copy followed me to the next two stores. What are the odds?

I ended up ordering a copy online. What's that old saying? Fourth time is the charm.

No worries, man. I was just thinking who I had not seen post here for a while, and most obvious was you and Ray Jackson.

I just got a shipping confirmation for my B&N.com order, so there should still be copies out there.
