Will have to dive into another bookshelf eventually... i have 5 including this one of dvds and bds. this is my other shelf of blus... so far i keep the Criterion ones on that bookcase.
[Show spoiler] I do have a filing system but not much of one. I usually always break them down by studio... however the Digibooks I keep together usually and the slipcovers are usually together somehow.

Just watched Tati's Playtime for the first time, and wow. Now has the privilege of being one of my favourite films that I'm sure will garner further appreciation on repeated viewings.
As already spoken about to death, the set design and choreography are mindblowing. Even from the opening sequence at the airport I was completely awe struck. Just by employing simple, wide camera angles, Tati manages to encompass a multitude of personalities and ongoings, and presents so much energy and action, all within the frame. The shift from commentary on alienation in a modern, streamlined world of the office building to the joyous spontaneity and chance of the human spirit in the restaurant sequence is totally seamless and a pleasure to watch. Tati as the oblivious observer works so well, and due to the elaborate and overwhelming set design, allows the audience to feel the claustrophobic effect of modernization and bureaucracy. God damn it was good, I can only imagine what it would have been like to view in 70mm. The print on the Criterion blu was the closest I'm going to get perhaps, but wow, what a film. |

A Hollywood 40's and 50's noir set would be incredible. Obviously films like Sunset Blvd., Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity would not be part of it (studio would never license those) but a set with films like IN A LONELY PLACE, NIGHTMARE ALLEY, THE GLASS KEY, THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, THE BIG HEAT, etc--- would be awesome.

Nope - don't have that yet. It's an intriguing area of investigation that will no doubt lure me in at some point.
I recently picked up the 2-disc version of The Killers, which strangely seems to be out-of-print according to most online sellers. Great to have the two versions together. I haven't seen Ace in the Hole - it's a must-get for me, as I am also a fan of Billy Wilder. I've also gotta catch up on the Jules Dassin noirs - a grave oversight on my part. ccfixx - thanks for that link. There are quite a few, to be sure, and I have a reasonable number of them. I always like to see more - although perhaps there aren't that many outstanding American noirs yet to be brought to digital disc... as ShellOil says, A criterion set of 40s/50s US noir would be something special - on bluray of course. It would be great to see some of the classic films that are public domain get great transfers, eg. D.O.A. Last edited by bugsy_pal; 11-02-2010 at 01:32 PM. |
