Watching Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, which serves as my introduction to Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Yes, I have seen Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows, so this will make for an interesting comparison.

I hope you enjoy it. It's been too long since I've seen it, actually. I definitely need to correct that.

Criterion has updated the specs for Police Story boxset and it now says that they will be presenting an alternative cut of PS2 that is sourced from a new 2K transfer.

I love everything Sirk, but have yet to acquire or watch any Fassbinder. I really need to correct that. Either the upcoming flash sale or the July B&N.

I'm glad I didn't buy the non US Blu-ray of Berlin Alexanderplatz despite never watching any of his works despite wanting to since I was a teenager.

I've been recently catching up with Fassbinder as well, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved Fox and His Friends. I think that and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant are both still on Amazon Prime.

Welcome to the thread, Grey Wolf! Do you collect Criterions in your film library? (Garbo would be a great addition too).

I would love a Clarence Brown/Greta Garbo set. They don't have the same entanglement as Sternberg and Dietrich, but they made seven films together over nine years, were pretty strongly associated with each other, and three of the four of their films together that I've seen are really good to great. And the fourth is, famously, the one where "Garbo talks!" and it has a sublime supporting performance by Marie Dressler, so even if I think it's so-so, it's something I could happily watch again.

Endorse. Though both her MGM silents and talkies. That would be one hell of a box set. And well whoever has the Saga of Gosta Berling and her other Swedish films which would be right up Criterion's alley, though I believe Kino released the one on DVD.

A very warm welcome to you, Grey Wolf!

I would be up for a Garbo collection, too. My experience with her filmography is somewhat limited, as she is yet another one of the greats that is woefully underrepresented on blu-Ray. I have her only two domestic releases, Grand Hotel and Ninotchka, and thoroughly enjoyed both. And I set my DVR to autorecord any of her upcoming films being shown, but sadly, only the aforementioned Grand Hotel is scheduled. I do have Mata Hari to watch yet.

As Senseabove mentioned, she did several movies with Clarence Brown, and that would make for an interesting box set focus. I’d like to view some more of his work, as I’ve only seen National Velvet and Wife vs. Secretary (I’m a big Jean Harlow fan; she’s another actress I’d kill to get a boxed set for) thus far, but both were thoroughly entertaining. Garbo’s Anna Karenina is high on my “want to see” list. I’d also like to see some of her silent film work.

Is there ever a specific day of the week flash-sales usually fall on in Feb?

The Flesh and the Devil, The Temptress, The Kiss are really great silent movies. It is a crime that there is only one Jean Harlow blu (Public Enemy). Would love to see Dinner at Eight released on blu.
The scene in Mata Hari with the young man, The Madonna and the eternal candle. Only Garbo could have done that. Poor kid never stood a chance.

I do believe the past few have fallen on a Tuesday. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I'd like to add Bette Davis. Sure, 15 films of her have been released on Blu-ray in the US according to this site (I excluded Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid for the obvious reason), but most of them are from her later years (post-50s).

And since this is The Criterion Collection thread, I must confess I often chuckle to myself imagining Ms. Davis being pissed off in heaven (or hell) about Joan Crawford (whose Golden Age Hollywood stuff also underappreciated on Blu-ray, by the way) made her entry in the collection first with Mildred Pierce. Perhaps a small box set of her 3 films with William Wyler a la 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman would compensate for that: Jezebel, The Letter and The Little Foxes.
