Really the most sensible option would be for studios work out something with Criterion (and other boutiques) by simply including their Blu-ray in the UHD package. Both parties would benefit because they wouldn't have to put any work into the included Blu-ray while Criterion isn't burdened with the cost of making UHDs. They could even add a sticker showing that the Criterion edition is "included"

I dunno ... a B&W film from 1964? Seems like a stretch to me. Until a precedent is set with other B&W movies that old being released on UHD and selling well, I would think that are there are many more likely candidates before Dr. Strangelove for the next currently in-print Criterion title to make it to UHD. I'm not saying it couldn't happen someday, but not as the next title. The studios tend to release UHD titles that can take advantage of the increased AV capabilities of the format. Are there currently any UHD releases of films that came out before the late 70s (e.g. Grease, Close Encounters, etc.)? I can't think of any.

EDIT: 2001: A Space Odyssey. But that's an AV extravaganza ...

BTW, if a movie shows up on Criterion's streaming channel, does that make it likely it will also be released by Criterion on disc?

I'm thinking of Sylvia Scarlett.

No guarantee, the streaming rights are different than home video fights. If they start with Janus logo then it’s a good indication. Or if it starts with a Criterion logo and hasn’t previously been released.

Only studio-owned Criterions from before 1980 I see as viable UHDs (either from them or major studios) would be Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, Easy Rider, Rosemary's Baby, The Graduate, and The Princess Bride.

The Princess Bride is from 1987.

This is possibly the best news of 2019. An WKW boxset looks like a good possibility next year.

I'm thinking of checking out some Kenji Mizoguchi titles, anyone suggest a good starting place? I'm familiar with Shindo & Kurasawa's work on Criterion (but not Ozu)

Maybe Ugetsu? Seem more supernatural, something I really like about Shindo.

Ugetsu is definately great, but Kuroneko has it beat in everyway IMO.

I suggest starting with The Life of Oharu. It is an absolutely amazing tale of existential despair.

Ugetsu and Sansho the Bailiff are the best starting points. If you like those go to A Story From Chikamatsu and The Life of Oharu.

I disagree with Javy on Kuroneko being better than Ugetsu. If you want more creepy and a ghost story closer to how Americans see it than Kuroneko will be more your cup of tea. Ugetsu and it's view on spirits is closer to Kwaidan, with spirits being a part of everyday life. Of course I'm a bit biased with my avatar being what it is and all...

So even though I like Kaneto Shindo, Mizoguchi is my man.

WKW In the mood for love and Chungking express are masterpieces but what other WKW films are on that level. I've seen Ashes of time and liked it but didn't care forr the Grandmaster at all. Always wanted to see 2049

Kenji Mizoguchi is my favorite Director of all time, and Kazuo Miyagawa is my favorite Cinematographer. Kurosawa, Kubrick, Tarkovsky and Scorsese next in line for Cinematography and Directors of course. So if you like movies specifically based on camera work alone you will like and be fascinated with Ugetsu.

Ugetsu is for me the best film of all time. It's plot/storytelling are decades ahead of itself!, and touches on so many subjects and angles. He is also the master of tragedy in film, yet life is a tragedy for all. So if tragedy is not your cup of tea look elsewhere cough cough Spielberg.

I think Kazuo's earliest and best use of Black and White Cinematography happens in Sansho the Balliff which is the best film story ever told of Slavery and it's effects upon this world. Kurasawa's Yojimbo is a 2nd. Rashomon the most progressive obviously for it's time, but not as refined as Sansho The Balliff. But the overall best is in Shansho The Balliff because the Cinematography becomes a key part of the Storytelling. Kubrick and Tarkovsky would later pull from him obviously, and push the boundaries further at later dates on The Shining 1980 and Stalker 1979 and further redefine again what focused and high intelligent Cinematography can do.

IMHO Just start with Ugetsu on Blu Ray during a dark creepy late night. This tale will make you think about everything that can go wrong in many a various persons lifetime when it's done. Then it will stick with you, and floor you. I hope you have a good Center channel because this is Mono. If you have a projector and a Center you will be in for the treat of a lifetime. No happy endings here though. Dark cold truth.

MY TOP 10 of All time....looks like this so if these don't appeal to you in any shape or form dismiss my post.

1. Ugetsu (1953)
2. 2001 A.S.O. (1968)
3. The Shining (1980)
4. Sansho The Balliff (1954)
5. Stalker (1979)
6. Goodfellas (1990)
7. Ghost in The Shell (1995)
8. Breathless (1960)
9. Rashomon (1950)
10. Persona (1966)

Something like that....Top 4 are immovable for me though.

I really like Fallen Angels, Days of Being Wild and Happy Together!

I personally am not a fan of 2046, I seem to be a minority opinion, but it just didn’t click the few times I’ve watched it.

I’ll gladly watch it again in a boxset!

IMHO 2046 is almost at the same level as In the Mood For Love (but very different).

Also, Fallen Angels and Happy Together are not far behind Chungking Express and Ashes of Time.
