Magnificent Obsession is a great announcement.

This cheers me up from my hospital room.

Sorry to hear that you are in the hospital, Owl.

I am also cheered by this news. It was Rock Hudson's breakout role!

I’m hoping to go home tomorrow, at least. I checked in on Sunday evening with severe lower abdominal pain. It turned out to be an intestinal obstruction as a result of an apparent infection, so I am on antibiotics now, and I seem to be on the mend.

I’m missing a Chromatics concert tonight, and that peeves me, but health is more important.

After my ruptured appendix last year that necessitated a six-day hospital stay, I’m really paranoid about ab pain these days. I’m just glad that I was not given the Ikiru diagnosis.

I have 'the Inland Sea' on laserdisc. Really surprised it's getting a Criterion blu-ray release. Doesn't deserve it IMO...

(but maybe I'm being too harsh since I haven't watched it in decades).

I doubt many people would seriously argue for the artistic worth of Waters' films, especially his 70's ones. They are enjoyed more as 'paracinema' and often defended largely for political reasons, especially in academia.

Having said that, I do broadly agree with you that many people would benefit from broadening their outlook.
These are all very good points. Thanks for that.

As to the announcements: Wow. This may be the first month in a long time, if ever, when I'll be getting everything. I still need to research The Inland Sea (which, like others, when I saw "Inland" I was thinking something very, very different ) and An Angel at My Table, but I love Campion's other work, so I will probably be getting that for sure. I'm 100% sure about the Ozu, the Sirk, and the Kiarostomi set. I have 4 of his films, none of which are in this set, all of which were super-impressive. It was his work which initially turned me onto Iranian cinema, and I'm very happy that happened.

The French release of Magnificent Obsession looks good. I’ll probably double dip for the extras. I’m sure Criterion will probably release Written on The Wind as well eventually. Oh Great Owl, hope you make a full recovery. I too had abdominal issues in my past and being in the hospital is no fun.

I'm definitely in for Magnificent Obsession (love Sirk and Jane and Rock) and will definitely check out The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice on the Criterion Channel before I make a decision on that. I'll have to do some research on the others.

I'll keep you in my thoughts, man. I know from experience just how miserable those kinds of problems can be. Make sure they give you some decent dietary advice. Hard to come by in a lot of hospitals...

Hope you feel better Owl!

As for this month's announcements, nothing really blows me away, but its great Magnificent Obsession is getting a blu-ray upgrade. After the July announcements, I honestly wasn't expecting a big month like last month.

Of course clearly the only movies anyone can possibly ever truly enjoy are post 1970s Hollywood movies, not this foreign arthouse crap...

They better have spine 1000 be something crazy.

Eyes Wide Shut would do the trick.

An excellent month. Kiarostami and Ozu in the same month is a dream.

Now if only Wes Anderson could appear at Barnes and Noble during a 50% off sale signing copies of The Grand Budapest Hotel on Criterion blu-ray with Godzilla crashing the party all would be as happy as I am with August's slate.

I hadn't seen your post on that thread so thanks for posting here too. I better start saving for November.
