These are are my totals. For comparison, I've included totals for all films in my collection in the 3rd column. Getting the totals was a little trickier than I thought using the blu-ray.com database (the only real record I have of my blu ray collection). In the database, box sets count as one release, but if they span decades (such as The Before Trilogy), then they counted toward each decade's totals.
So, while not scientifically accurate, it does show the trend. No surprises here. Films of the 40s through 70s are my sweet spot. Decade Criterion All -------------------------------- 1920s: 2 9 1930s: 18 47 1940s: 29 138 1950s: 25 192 1960s: 21 159 1970s: 17 132 1980s: 13 82 1990s: 3 60 2000s: 2 28 2010s: 1 15 |

1920s: 1 1930s: 6 (another 4 if you count the Eclipse movies, plus a 5th with Magnificent Obsession) 1940s: 13 1950s: 4 1960s: 6 2010s: 1 On Blu Ray: 1920s: 1 1930s: 1 1940s: 5 1950s: 2 1960s: 2 1990s: 1 Still really new to the Blu Ray game. |

Counting by SKU, not titles, and putting box-sets under their earliest entry:
BD: 20s: 1 30s: 2 40s: 8 (Counting the Bergman box under this) 50s: 11 60s: 24 70s: 10 80s: 14 90s: 10 00s: 8 10s: 1 DVD: 20s: 1 30s: 7 40s: 8 50s: 9 60s: 14 70s: 2 80s: 7 90s: 3 Makes sense that the ‘60s have a considerable lead. The kind of arthouse fare Criterion specializes in peaked in that decade, IMO. |

Has anyone heard rumors about blu ray upgrades of Fiend w/o a Face or the Monsters and Madmen set? Thank you.

Has ever Criterion upgraded their good old not-that-influential sci-fi/horror movies? Fiend without a Face, Monsters and Madmen series, Equinox... I'd love to see them on Blu-ray, but I won't hold my breath. (Jigoku maybe?)

I watched my copy of Akira Kurosawa's Dreams last night and was blown away by the picture quality! I recently upgraded to a 65" OLED and thought that this might be a good test for this disk. It passed with flying colours - I can't imagine a UHD of this could look any better.
The film itself is entrancing. The first two dreams are a pure delight of colour, composition and music/sound (the Fox wedding is particularly beguiling). I'll spoiler the rest... [Show spoiler] There is an amazing wealth of extras on this disk too - a commentary, 150 and 52 minute docs, some interviews, a trailer and a fat booklet. Criterion knocked this one out of the park! |

Mine breaks down as follows. I've counted box sets as 1 entry, otherwise it would way higher by virtue of that 'Zatoichi' box set alone, but even without all those films, the 1960's come out on top.
1950's: 1 blu and 1 DVD 1960's: 4 blu and 2 DVD 1970's: 3 blu and 2 DVD 1980's: 2 blu and 1 DVD 1990's: 2 blu and 2 DVD 2000's: 1 blu and 1 DVD |

They haven't updated any of them. I have them all on DVD, but would always consider upgrading.

Surprisingly, it seems like I enjoy the 50s, 60s, and 70s the most. The Zatoichi and Bergman box sets probably pumped those numbers up, but even without them there are a healthy number of crime, noir, history, drama, horror, and sci-fi I like from the era. |
