I have been holding back on Tokyo Olympiad since the runtime is very long and lately I have been keeping myself away from long films but since it's almost summer and I have more free time now, I might attempt to go watch this on the Criterion Channel soon. Very scared for the runtime but very excited for the action!

It can be fair for a handful of posts -- not years (or a decade with a couple shows) of the same people making the same arguments over and over. What do they think this is, a Star Wars thread.

Be aware that it’s not a documentary in the traditional sense of providing a record of the sporting action and results. It is often described as “impressionistic” which is definitely an accurate assessment. Ichikawa was more interested in capturing the humanistic side of competition, and the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the Games - which he does brilliantly through beautiful CinemaScope cinematography. The Japanese Olympic Committee - expecting something more conventional - was disappointed in this approach, and the film was heavily edited before release; the Criterion edition features the full version.

We all have our viewing thresholds, but Tokyo Olympiad is a superb achievement that I personally find captivating for every minute of its almost three-hour running time.

Basically how to get everyone's attention:
1.) Say something bad about the main topic of the forum (Examples: "Golf sucks" in a golf forum)
2.) Enjoy the ride to hell

Eh, Criterion can be a bit too trigger-happy when it comes to noise reduction on a lot of their releases.

I'm going with in no particular order:
  • Stray Dog
  • Green for Danger(yes I know there is the Network Blu, but I'm sure Criterion would do a much better job)
  • The Threepenny Opera
  • The Rebel Samurai set(yeah I know this is cheating somewhat as its four films and not one)
  • Trouble in Paradise
  • King of Kings 1927(I know there is the region free French BluRay, but its a tad expensive)
  • The Thief of Bagdad 1940
  • Le Deuxičme Souffle(this is probably my top film if I were forced to choose)
  • ...And God Created Woman(I really don't know what the delay is with this one as there are French and German Blus of it)
  • La Bęte Humaine 1938

I left out titles like Pandora's Box since there is a good chance it is with Kino and not Criterion otherwise it would be Number 1 on my list. Also, left out Criterion titles that have not got a Blu upgrade stateside but have a region B Blu since its not imperative for me that Criterion release a title since I'm region free. Talking about titles like The Naked City, Pickup on South Street, and OOP titles like Le Cercle Rouge(though I could easily double dip if Criterion releases it with a superior transfer), Ran, and the Fellini titles which will be released as part of the Fellini set.

Beaver's review of the Australian release of The War of the Worlds from Imprint. Interesting to compare the upcoming Criterion:

Looks magnificent in terms of color but the sharpness feels a little blurry (Maybe because DVDBeaver doesn't do good with screenshots) but I have a feeling Criterion would probably look something as the same as this except they might do the sharpness a little more justice. Still, the slipcover (I think, I don't know) and the Blu-ray menu is spectacular (Except for the Plastic Blu-ray case) even though the [Imprint] logo can be a little distracting. Still, I think Criterion is already going to be wonderful just from seeing this and I'm glad the Australian release looks beautiful!

If I'm right, Kurosawa was going to be the director before Ichikawa replaced him. I'd love to be in the universe where that happened if just to see how he would do this.
